Do we still have rights to Earl Barron

Sorry if this has already been covered, but I haven't heard a peep about him all off season and he wasn't too bad last year.

With Moz and Turiaf and Jerome Jordan, and Curry filling up a roster spot, is Barron still on the team? I think somebody would pick him up in a heartbeat if he's not, so I assume he is.

J.R. Giddens - The Knicks have not renounced J.R. Giddens, even though he played on the Mavericks summer league roster and not theirs. Strange times. Giddens started last year with the Celtics, and with the news that he wasn't having the third year option on his rookie contract exercised. This made him only the 7th player all time to have this happen to him; the other six were Patrick O'Bryant, Yaroslav Korolev, Julius Hodge, Shannon Brown, Morris Almond and Joe Alexander. He played only 99 minutes for the Celtics, spending 4 games on assignment in the D-League, and then was traded to New York as a part of the Nate Robinson deal. Giggidens then got a few more minutes, playing 140 minutes in 11 games and recording a PER of 10.5. Charged with the tasks of improve his shooting and ball handling coming out of college, Giddens didn't; his best talent remains his ability to run around a lot. He wins possessions in this manner, but his offense in the NBA is still limited to the opportunities born out of athleticism. At 6'5, that doesn't get it done.


Earl Barron - Despite their free agency plan, the Knicks never renounced Earl Barron. They did this because they intend to re-sign him for more than the minimum; in 7 games last season, Barron averaged 12/11. Barron is a big old boy - 7 foot, about 250lb - who only really wants to use that size to get off mid-range jumpshots. He has great touch on that shot and is a pretty polished offensive player, but he's not a physical defender, and nor is he normally a good rebounder. Those numbers from last season were the exception, not the rule. Nevertheless, Barron is good enough to be in the NBA.

The "rights" to Barron is really insignificant.

He's an unrestricted FA and the Knicks don't hold any exception rights to him.

Yeah, he still has a cap hold, but the Knicks really have no rights or advantage over any other team in signing him.

We never had his rights. He only played in a handful of games so he doesn't qualify as a bird free agent or an early bird free agent. The knicks don't have any advantage in resigning him.

Well, you can sign & trade either of these guys & get something for them. No other team can do that. Anyone else must use cap money & sign them outright

actually, now that i think about it, barron is pretty important for us to re-sign. mozgov could very well turn out to be a stiff at C, and even if he's not, i doubt he's ready to contribute this year. eddy ... well no one is counting on him. that leaves ronny turiaf alone at C. he's got his own injury concerns every year. if amare is not playing center, i don't think we can really count on randolph to play it either. amare is waaay more physical than randolph.

i know mike likes to play PFs at C, but you still need some big strong dudes to bang down low if you wanna keep up with the big teams.

it would be a REALLY good move to bring back barron. he probably won't be a difference make when we play the likes of boston, but he can certainly help us win some games along the way this year. the more mobile big men we have, the better.

The Knicks don't have any bird rights for either player because none of them played 3 full years under their previous contract. Barron isn't important at all for NY. They have a couple young 7 footers coming in (Mozgov & Jordan), along with Randolph and Turiaf.

Could be a decent re-sign, as on the cheap and finished last season strongly, guess it would also depend on the pending mason/brown offers though? More current depth at pf/c than at guards...

You have non-Bird rights on Earl Barron and early Bird rights on J.R. Giddens. Neither of these mean a lot, since you have the cap space to re-sign them if you want irrespective of what level of Bird rights you have on them. But, there it is anyway.
