Sweetening up the Jose Calderon deal

You guys are delusional if you think the raptors will trade Jack or DeRozan, they are unmovable, same with amir and sonny, maybe bargnani. The only players the pacers can attempt to get is calderon, evans, pob, andersen, all the **** basically.

If those players are unmoveable, Toronto has some hard times comin their way.

Why do they have some hard times? They have young players with chemistry and potential, I don't see why they would give them up for Dunleavy, a soft player who gets pushed around everywhere.

Says the guy who's starting power forward has a name that's an antonym for the position he plays.

Hey guys, Raps fan here. I really see your team as the best partner for a Calderon trade but I understand that you don't want to mess with your future flexibility. What about this deal:

Calderon + MIA 2011 1st

for

Ford + Jones

This way you add salary next year and in 2012-2013 but by getting out of Jones deal you still have about 20M$ in cap space counting your 2 rookies i.e. your 2011 pick (probably slotted between 10 and 16 depending on your record in 2010-2011) + MIA 1st (which will be about 26-30th). By adding the MIA pick, you can package the 2 picks to move up a couple of spots in the draft too.

IMO, Calderon is a very good player to make your young guys grow up. He can work the pick/roll, distribute, shoot the 3 at an elite % and keep T/O at the minimum, his defense is obviously the issue but a guy with his skillset would make 15M$ a year if he was an elite defender.

For the Raptors, summer of 2012 is the key. Next 2 years will be about developping the young guys and add 2 other lottery picks, adding Jones contract is not ideal but Colangelo will have 2 more years to try to package him somewhere amd get him off the books for the summer of 2012.

Your priority would be to add 2 bigmen because IMO Hansbrough could be a good depht PF but not a star, with the cap space you can certainly add a solid big in free agency.

Interesting altenative. As compared to the original trade I could see where the Pacers would rather keep Dunleavy. On the other hand D. Jones can defend the point and given Calderon's defensive deficiencies you might like to have that defensive alternative. Bottom line if you buy the original idea you probably could get on board with this idea too.

The Miami 1st really isn't an incentive. It's late in the 1st, and holds tremendously less value than a very early 2nd round pick. If you want to include a pick for value (which Indy would need to consider it, it'd really have to be in the 10-20 range, not 28-30, or an equivalent prospect. I hate to say it, but yeah, it would possibly take an Ed Davis type attachment.

I do like that you included Dahntay's contract though. While he's a nice player, if we trade for a long-term deal on an average PG, we'd need to temper the cost by including his contract, since it's decently long-term as well (even for not a ton of money). It would help.



But no, I wouldn't consider the MIami 1sts from either you or Cleveland as anything but a hindrance. Those would be neutral value. Not positive, but not negative either.

I appreciate the apprehension on Calderon, but I am curious as to why less expensive vets like Bibby are not in the Indy mix as well. Granted, his skills are on the downside, but his contract is less expensive and Indy would still have plenty of cap space if the Jones contract were also moved. Atlanta needs size and could move Jamal Crawford to the PG positon. However, the reaction to Bibby has be visceral in Indy without any clear explanation. Stephenson will need some help, Ford is not in the mix and Bibby is a clear upgrade over Watson, Barea and the other available collection of oddlot PGs available at this time.

I like Bibby too, but we're building for the future, and bringing in Bibby would be counterproductive. We need to see what Lance has, see if TJs gonna play right for that contract, and see if AJ is in our future as well.

Calderon has some skills and his passing ability and unselfishness would be great for players who need to be setup, like Danny, Rush, and Tyler. But his injury history, contract, and lack of D could really hurt us. I'd do the deal with the 2 separate trades shown b4, but I'd wait until at least December to do it. That gives us the Worlds and about 20 games to fully eval JC.
