BOS - MIN from Trade Board

Post#1 » by shrink » Fri Aug 6, 2010 1:11 pm

BOS GETS: Corey Brewer + Telfair + Koufos

MIN GETS: Avery Bradley + Rasheed (retiring)

BOS adds more win-now players, MIN clears cap space as Rasheed Wallace retires, and gets a prospect for Brewer in the last year of his rookie deal.

Seriously shrink? We are NOT in the position to be shedding talent for cap space. This is one of the worst ones I've seen you post here.

Yeah, I think we have all the cap we need now . I'm sick of helping out Boston as well :)

It depends on what you think of Avery Bradley and Corey Brewer, I guess.

This deal puts us 5.8 million under the minimum.
Kosta and Telfair for Sheed and Bradley makes a bit more sense, if we can find a vet PG we like.
Leaves us about 1.9 million under the minimum which we can spend on Earl Watson, or somebody...
I doubt they would do it though :)

I don't see why we should give them Corey. He did well last year, and spent the last three days working out with Beas and Durant in DC, to everyone's satisfaction. I think he's gonna get even better :)

This one I can't get behind at all. Bradley absolutely has some playing ability, but he's really a combo guard and will probably have him most success at the point. That being said, I don't know that I need him behind Flynn/Rubio, regardless of whether one gets dealt at some point.

Add in the loss of Brewer and this one feels pretty bad to me. Brewer has some holes in his game, but he's shown that he's capable of improving. I would rather eat the money and start the year with Brewer, Telfair and Koufos.

I'm eager to see how Brewer improved this offseason. Who knows? He could be our best wing this year. Too early to be making these kind of decisions. I like the idea of a future Bradley and Rubio backcourt though. I'm not convinced Rubio will ever be able to stay in front of most PG's. I kinda think both teams decline this trade though.

I would do it. I can also see why Boston would do it. I don't think they like Telfair, but he is an experienced backup PG unlike Bradley who as of right now is more of a SG. Brewer gives them defense and depth on the wing. Koufos gives them even more front court depth and with Perkins' injury and the O'neal's record/history of injuries it wouldn't hurt.

The key for my reasoning is that I don't believe we are likely to retain Brewer after this year. I like him a lot, but don't see us or Kahn doing it. Kahn has previously stated that Brewer's defense is overrated as he isn't that good at on the ball defense, so I don't think Kahn is too high on him. The largest reason though is that he will be a restricted free agent next year and both Wesley Johnson and Martell Webster are young, on good/cheap contracts, and were recently acquired this offseason as Kahn guys. If you think that Webster and Johnson are staying, Brewer almost has to be gone. If Beasley becomes primarily a SF then that puts Brewer 4th on the wing depth chart. Even if Beasley isn't a SF, that leaves us without a premier wing as none of Brewer, Webster, or Johnson are premier wings which means we need to get a premier wing which would move Brewere to 4th on the list of wings unless Webster or Johnson are traded in the acquisition of a premier wing.

Bradley would be a better fit with Rubio and free us up to deal Flynn when he is healthy.

I don't disagree on this point, I think Brewer's odds of still being on this roster at the end of the year are slim. This just isn't how I want to move him. We don't need cap space, so a salary dump makes no sense and this is still a young and athletic player who has show he can improve. If the Wolves decide he isn't in their longterm plans I'm ok with him being dealt, but the return needs to be better than cap space or another combo guard.

FM has the right idea here. There are better packages out there for Brewer's services, and we are not in the position to trade him in a salary dump (not to mention the fact that Wallace would be our highest paid player, and has a player option for 2011). Bradley is a nice young prospect, but would be buried on the bench behind Flynn and eventually Rubio.

I think we've cleared enough cap for one offseason. We are in a really good position to either sign a really good player straight up, or take on one by packaging youth talent. At this point I'd say we have enough cap space to make us value our youth talent more highly.

I agree with this. I don't think we'll be the winning bidder for Corey Brewer's services in 2011, and our 2010 draft demonstrates we're moving in a different direction. I like the kid, but his trade value will be going down as we give his playing time to our future investments of Webster, Wes Johnson and Beasley.

Avery Bradley may not be the best prospect in the NBA, but he is young and we can have him locked in for four years on cheap rookie scale if we want.

As for "we have enough cap space," it looks like Kahn may get rid of Telfair for a young, vet min PG whether we trade him and get cap space for him, or whether we simply cut him and take the salary hit for nothing. Personally, I prefer added cap space, just in case.

I think the wolves should keep all the young talent they have, because that is the bait that will be able to net us a big fish. (the fishing puns are "fin"tended)

With Tolliver, MIN now only has $9.7 mil in cap space right now, and that's if we waive Steimsa.

We will have $2.8 mil more once Rubio's hold comes off, next Fall.

If we're trying to land a big fish, Bradley (4 years on a rookie contract) and cap space from Rasheed retiring is likely more valuable then Telfair's contract, Koufos (basically worth a 2nd), and Brewer (more valuable to us, plus he gets a new paycheck in the offseason)

cap space from Rasheed>Telfair and Koufos's salary (maybe equal)
Bradley (4 years on rookie deal)>Brewer (needs a new contract next year)... a rebuilding team giving up talent I think would prefer Bradley to Brewer

-That being said, I really like Brewer and hope we keep him; but I think Kahn may be looking to trade him and if he is, then I don't mind moving him in a deal like this

Flynn/Ridnour/Bradley
Webster/Ellington/Bradley
Beasley/Johnson/Hayward
Love/Beasley/Tolliver
Darko/Pek/Tolliver

I don't see why we would trade Brewer for nothing right now. If he has a big year and you don't want to pay him, work out a S&T in the offseason.

If he has a big year and we want to do a S&T with Brewer then we would likely get a draft pick and cap space... which is basically what Rasheed and Bradley are.

He needs minutes for a big year, and I think that he won't get nearly as many this season as we play our other investments.

I don't think his trade value is going to go up, especially as we show more commitment to Webster/Wes Johnson/Beasley. When other teams realize we aren't going to match offers to re-sign him, they will likely just wait until next summer and offer nothing. I think right now we can still get something, and $5 mil in cap space and a 1st round prospect on a rookie deal for four years seems like a decent return to me.

Except that 1st round prospect will run into the same problem as Brewer (playing time), and it will only get worse next year.

Talent-wise, I guess its an okay deal. But we really aren't gaining anything. So in other words, this is just trading for the sake of trading.
