True but just like almost any other sporting league the big markets have the cash to spend. Phoenix is getting there though, 20 years ago it used to be one of the smaller NBA markets, now they are a midmarket team with a what is is #11 or #12 metro ranking area in the country? Get to around #5 and they will have the cash...

Right now though Sarver is trying to put a decent product on the floor, could he do more? Sure but he along with the Babmeister but a solid team together this team. It might not have much defense like some people want but remember smallball sells tickets, boring half court grind it out games don't...

Sarver please I am not at all impressed until he proves he is doing right by the team and not his pockets . I am not giving him a shred of credit lets see how the season plays out i really think Sarver is going to sell this team in the near future if he is as broke as some say that he is I wouldn't doubt. Here try to keep them competitive meaning no rebuild why tries to sell the team and after that then who knows! When that day comes we might have to have a parade just to celebrate the rebirth of franchise because as long as Sarver is owner this team will have a difficult time winning anything.

That's hilarious, but true.

Sarver needs to spend like this picture if he wants rings.

And more rings = more money made. It is a nice cycle.

Buss really made that team better. Ratliff replaces Mbenga. Blake replaces Farmar. Barnes replaces Walton (going on injured list for quite a while next season due to surgery).

That is not true at all! Easy example, the Knicks.

Buss can't reduce payroll, he has too much invested in players, who brought them a championship. Ever since they bought their five time champ from Minnesota, they have to keep up their payroll or they will end up like their team after Shaq left and before Gasol. They were handed a gift in Gasol, and they have been smart in other pick ups. Heck they spent twelve million just on Phil last year. The Suns aren't that big of a market team, and they built it from the ground up. A chip is the goal, but it doesn't define a team or it's success, and spending more doesn't guarantee a ring. Ask the Cavs how that worked out for them last year.

Barnes is nowhere near as smart as Walton. Mbenga barely played. I'll agree that Blake was a good pickup, but I will wait to see how much of an impact he will be able to add. If he is on the floor, that means that Fish is not, and Fish was the difference maker last year.

Barnes >>>>>>>>>>>>> Walton.

The only reason Walton is in the League is because of his daddy.

Walton was actually part of that laker benches success when they beat orlando.. only smart player coming off their bench and when he was out we saw what their old bench did chuck up stupid shots and make stupid plays until they lost the lead for the starters. i don't think barnes will replace what walton brought he might be a better player but its just another low iq player coming off the lakers bench.

Not true. It just so happens that the lakers have the greatest player in the modern era. Yes, they paid to keep him but they drafted him. Look at the mavs, consistently high payroll, just how many championships had they won? The knocks had the highest payroll in the league a few seasons ago. They didn't make the layoffs. It takes a good front office capable of making savvy moves to win championships. Not soley a big pocketbook.

They didn't draft Kobe, if that is who you are talking about. They traded Vladi for him to the Hornets.

Again it also helped that they bought a five time champ from Minny, as well as having a huge spending market in LA.

Oddly enough, when you look back at other LAL greats, you find that they were acquired through trades. Even the ones they drafted. Magic (his draft pick)was traded to LAL from Utah in compensation for Gail Goodrich. James Worthy, another number one pick was traded to LAL from the Cavs. Kareem was traded to LAL, from the Bucks. Wilt was traded by Philly to LAL. Shaq was the only great player that signed as a FA in his prime (that I remember, but I didn't really follow the Lakers). There were other greats that signed as a FA, but not in their prime.

Guys like West and Baylor were drafted by the Minny Lakers, not LAL. Overall, they have done their best by buying a great team, and trading well. They've had their fair share of bad trades, like Butler for Brown, but overall, they have made great trades.

u win by getting great players playing together and play the game the right way. Im so sick of this bullcrap about a higher payroll = championship. Look at Dallas, did it help them? stop daydreaming that LA and phx are at the same level market wise because its not!

  what a great thread. The thing is, your theory is not exactly true. Yes, money does help a lot, but this is not the mlb where there is no cap. You have to be wise in the decisions you make. set your team up to sign or trade for great players. You also have to be very, very lucky that your trades, drafts and the money you spend brings you a championship. Dallas has spent, NY has, NOH, kiings and so forth. Sarver has been one of the top spenders in the nba the past 5 years or so. So why no championship? You just dont spend like a drunkin sailor. That is stupid.

You have two teams that have won most of the nba championships. Money was not the only reason.

Honestly, suns have not really caught a break in the draft in its history. They have put together solid winning teams and made some good trades. But we rain into the celtics, mj, the dream, Timmy and Kobe. We have had our chances to win.

We had a whle year to watch MBarnes and we saw that while he does have some skills he also jacks up some seriously bad shots and has terrible, and expensive, lapses of judgement.

Walton knows the jackson triangle inside out and is just a smarter player. Barnes will eb in the doghouse sooner rather than later, I'd expect.

One philosophy you can never argue with.
That is if you don't spend, you will fail, for sure.
