Looks like LD is campaigning really hard for Pape Sy.

Like said on the summer league topic, his French team is not a big team, and will fight for stay in the first league (the last teams go to the second league), and in lots of these kind of teams, it's always veteran players that get playing time.
The team can develop young player, but only until they they are old enough to play with the first team. Then they can't gamble on them improving their game in the cost us losing too much games and not stay in first league.

So if Pape stays with Le Havre, and don't see enough minutes to develop his game, maybe in a different role than what Larry Drew want him to play, better get him now.

From the source, it says that ATL staff did not think signing him at first (and even after the summer league), but they recently changed their mind, and are now in negotiations with Le Havre.
Pape had a clause to go in NBA, but it already ended. So they need now to negotiate the buy-out of his next year contract.

Maybe if ATL had decided sooner to bring him here, they would not have to pay any buy-out.
No, they have to see if Le Havre agrees to let him walk away, and if the $500,000 (max an NBA team can offer) are worth it.

Pape seems wanted to join ATL even before the summer league, so it should not be a problem on his side. Only waiting the answer from Le Havre.

This is why NBA teams need to expand the NBDL and have a team for each NBA team. We could have Pape Sy start every NBDL game in our system and be ready for the future. Teague could have done that last year and I could go on and on.

^You're right; it'd be better to develop a MLB-style minor league for basketball players. A lot of guys don't want to go to college but would rather go straight to getting paid. It'd be great to see wonderfully-talented athletes who've been taught all the basics before arriving in the NBA.

Problem is, baseball sells tickets but the NBDL is not there yet. You can't create more teams that won't make money.

But I'm sure that most people agree with you concerning the growth of the NBDL.
My mother told me, she said, "Elwood, to make it in this world you either have to be oh, so clever or oh, so pleasant." Well, for years I was clever; I recommend pleasant.

Poppy is already 22, it really doesn't make sense stashing him overseas expecting big leaps in his game. We should just bring him over now and have him see better competition in an NBA practice than he would on the bench there.

Post of the day...I have longed to see this happen because there are enough guys who are in the NBDL and/or on the fringe of playing in the states. Allowing them to go overseas right now makes them tougher to stay in touch with and allow them to grow into a system.

All NBA teams should be considering this, an extended version of the NFL practice squad.

According to the agent of the 22-year-old French guard, Pascal Levy, the Hawks are currently in talks with Le Havre to negotiate the buy-out of Sy.

never trust an AGENT. They are paid to speak in lies and half truths. Do you really expect the Atlanta Spirit to pay extra to bring a 2nd round pick over a year early?

It's not only his agent,
the french sources have interview from both his agent and Pape Sy himself. Too much for not being real.
And his agent has nothing to win from saying that if it's not real. At the time he still has clause to leave, he could have tried to increase his value for other team, but now Pape is under contract for another year, what's the point to say that if it's not true ?
He won't get more playing time by saying that, if Pape leaves next summer, he won't be in long term plan in Le Havre so they won't play him a lot for a one year rental.

Pape said they are talking about that with Le Havre team. He would not say if it was not true. (Link)

If it works out it could explain why we haven't looked at backup wings.
