Would you extend JRich?

Post#1 » by mybloodisorange » Mon Aug 9, 2010 1:09 pm

Ok hypthetical here. Please dont argue the premise just go along with it.
Every one knows that the Suns are looking to move JRich and his expiring contract this year.
Lets just say that he continues to play well and talks to management about being willing to rework his contract for a lesser amount if he can be extended since he likes playing here.

He makes over 14 mil next year i would leave that alone, but if he was willing i would add 4 years on for 8-9 mil per. That averages out to be almost 50 mil for 5 years which is still good for him and good for the suns imo. We need more than Hedo and Lopez to hang around to be successfull once the old guys (hill and nash) retire.

So what would you guys be willing to do if you were the Suns gm. Consider that JRich wants to play here and would take less than what hes making now, but you also dont want to insult the guy. Show me some numbers!

"Every one knows that the Suns are looking to move JRich and his expiring contract this year" - I think that's an assumption but anyway.

I don't want to resign him unless he could be had for cheap, like MLE cheap. I just don't think it's wise to carry a $8m-$9m contract for another 4 years when we are suppose to be in the market for young talent.

Extend him? Perhaps. But not anywhere near the salary he's at now. We'll have to see what becomes available next season, his expiring could prove valuable.

At first I was thinking it would be a good idea but the guy turns 30 this season and it's no gurantee that Nash will re-sign here past 2012. If they trade him they might get some draft picks/young talent or if they let him go they would have more capspace. Best option would probably be drafting a SG next year unless they decide to go big next year.

Richardson at $8m is great value for his production. His athleticism is still there and though it will begin to fade, I think he'll hold it for another 4-5 seasons.

I would re-sign Richardson and then sign Troy Murphy to the MLE next offseason. Use the Bi-Annual on a solid vet. big and then... wait for it.... wait for it.... use our 1st rounder to continue building upon or young core.

Quality bigs are hard to find and would really like it if we went for one in the draft but right now, with Warrick, Frye and Lopez (Lawal too?) signed for a few more years I don't think it's a priority. Unless of course, we get ourselves a steal at where we're drafting. Either way, I think we're probably going to be looking at BPA in the draft.

It sounds contradictory since decent SG's are easy to come by, in trades or in the draft but I'd still like us to move JRich for Iggy. I really think there's a good chance the Sixers will look to move Iggy around trade deadline, especially for expiring contracts. Only issue is that I think the Sixers will be looking for young talent to go with JRich since they it will be hard to sell JRich to the Sixer fans, so we may have to give up Dudley or EC or something.

Not saying I WANT JRich gone but I think it would be stupid to not look into possible trades.

I think I would certainly explore it, but my preference as in all contracts at that age would be to take a look at a declining contract. Maybe make it $40mil over 5 but going down. He gets slightly more than market when we are likely to need/use him the most, then slightly under the market when he starts declining. If not going down, I would at least explore a flat contract.

Something like
$10
$9
$8
$7
$6

or straight $8 mil every year.

He turns 30 this year right?

Im not sure. But I would DEFINITELY NOT trade him now. I would wait at least until the deadline.

40/5 is what I would offer. Or maybe 30/3. But there's always one team that overpays, so he probably wouldn't take that.

Assuming Turk plays PF we'll have 4 starters over 30 years old. If we do end up extending him i'd go no more than 3 years/20 mil.

Yes. I would extend J-Rich. But if there is a deal at the deadline that is better, i.e Igoudala, I would trade him.

Extend J-Rich? Of course. Without a doubt. He is explosive, capable of going off for 30 points, and adds much needed athleticism on a Suns team who without his services would be old bones.

JRich is the best as it gets in "mid-tier" shooting guards. Outside of JRich, we dive into the Kobe category. But with JRich, he is the best of his class (Iggy, Ray Allen at this stage of career, Raja, Brewer, Ben Gordon, JR Smith, etc).

Another reason u extend JRich is because he is fun to play with in NBA 2K10. Any player that is fun to play with must stay. Hakim Warrick is a beast in 2K10 and so is JRich. Both are keepers for a long time.

No way. Iggy>JRich easily... The guy is the best player on his team and gets double-teamed. On this team he'd turn into a whole different player. He's already versatile. Only Lebron/Iggy have at least 17/7/6+ average last season. Nash/Jrich/Turk is the most versatile perimeter other than Miami imo. Plus Iggy would be our best defender.

Do we pursue Iggy without Kerr though? He pushed hard for him at the deadline.

I hope Blanks being the supposedly good talent evaluator that he is, should take a look at Iggy. With Blanks just coming in and having no say in the current roster, I expect a big mid season trade just so he can make a splash and put his imprint on this team.

Yes, very good point.

History has shown that every time a new GM takes over, the new GM makes a major, significant trade to make a splash and mold roster into the way the new GM wants it. Kerr did is with Shaq and Bell/Diaw trades.

Based on history, I fully expect Suns to make a major trade by pre-season, end of year, or by February deadline.

I would not be surprised to see Dudley/Clark/JRich go.

Would I like that? Definitely not. But I expect it. At least 2 of those 3 guys are gone. Guaranteed.

I don't see Dudley traded. I don't think anyone will offer us a deal we can't refuse for Dudley and he's still young and fits fine with this system. If anything, I expect a deal with JRich packaged with EC or Lawal or some young talent we have. Teams want Dudley but won't offer much for him

As big of a splash new GM's like to make, rarely do they do it just for the hell of it. Kerr did the Shaq trade because Marion had to go. He did the Dudley trade because Bell and Diaw had to go. I hope Blanks works closely with Gentry on this one.
