Suns Board B-A-T Draft Thread - 2 Hrs Per Pick

Post#1 » by Miklo » Mon Aug 9, 2010 2:15 am

DRAFT ORDER RELEASED BELOW!!! Remember that each pick has big advantages; the first few picks you get a top player, the middle you never get screwed into waiting 60 picks for your next pick and the end, you get consecutive players at the end of the 1st, 3rd etc rounds. Without further ado:

Draft Reminders:
-You're not necessarily drafting the most talented player available; you're building a team that would play well and be judged highly together. You're also factoring in salary so some overpaid players may slip lower than they would in a typical fantasy draft.
-Remember, all current NBA players, 2010 draft picks and international players that an NBA team has rights to are fair game.
-As are all current coaches, including college, NBA and coaches who would realistically accept a job if offered one (Pat Riley would be fair game for example). You'll use one of your 13 picks for the coach and the coach will be part of how you're judged, but you still probably wouldn't be picking a coach until the last rounds.
-You can trade draft picks or drafted players at any time, as long as the pick in question is not currently "on the clock"
-The draft will be in "snake" order; so if you have the 1st pick you won't be picking again until pick 60 and then also 61, etc.
-Everyone is encouraged to post photo(s) and rationale for their picks. Not required or anything, just depending on how into it you are. I'll probably do it for my picks :D

There will be a URL for a tinychat chat room that people can hop into to discuss trades, etc. We'll hopefully get everyone's email addresses so you can reach out to a specific GM.

Post#3 » by Miklo » Mon Aug 9, 2010 2:16 am

Structure/Rules
Inspired by the pioneers over on the Knicks board, adapted Suns-style

The Draft

-Draft order determined using a random number generator website

-13 round draft, 12 players and 1 coach

-When it's your pick, you have 9 hours. If you know you won't be around for your pick, e-mail or PM someone your priority list and they can make the selection for you. If you don't pick within the allotted time, the next team will be on the clock. You can return and make your pick anytime, whether it's before the next team or a couple rounds later.

-Part of your score will be on cap management so do factor in salaries. You can obviously score great even going over the luxury tax line, but you can't build a $200 million payroll.

Who's eligible to be drafted

-any player on a real NBA team's roster last season or this season, plus 2010 draft picks and any international player that an NBA team has rights to

-for your coach, any coach that isn't long retired or anything - college and international coaches are allowed too

-also remember you're building your own team so for example this would be LeBron on your team, not LeBron with 2 other volume scorers

Trades

-any draft pick or player can be traded at any time. You can't trade the draft pick that is currently on the clock though. The kicker is, trades must send out the same number of picks they bring in. So if you're receiving 2 draft picks, you must be sending out 2 of your own.

-you can trade regardless of salary, etc during the draft - but after the draft salary restrictions will apply to future trades

Scoring

To be determined

Alrighty so we can continue finishing up our discussion about rules and then get started!

We'll do 9 hours per pick and if everyone is making their picks a bit quicker we can always rethink it.

Scoring, we need to figure out. We've had a few ideas so I'll post em here in a few.

Just a general question, how do people normally prepare for these types of fantasy league style games? I have zero experience.

So for scoring, here are the ideas so far - each GM judges all the other teams other than his, on these criteria

-contending for a ring: Knicks board out of 25 points, our ideas: 50 points, 40 points, at least 50%
-building for the future: Knicks board out of 10 points, our ideas: 10 points, 15 points
-cap management: Knicks board 10 points, our ideas: 25 points, 15 points
-roster management (good mix of veterans, stars, young players): Knicks board 10 points, our ideas: 10 points, 15 points

Ideas for other categories:
-Coaching, 15 points

And fishi, you could find a list ranking NBA players so you don't forget about anybody, then just always look at players you think will be available with your next pick. Basically you should plan on getting your starting 5 with your first 5 picks, so think about the positions that way. And also mixing your roster with vets, young players etc and factoring in salary - just imagine it as a real team and then compare your ideas to whatever player list you can find. Post any questions you have here though and you'll get answers pretty quickly.

im a bit confused on the scoring... Im not so sure its a good idea to be judging each others scores... maybe have the western conference judge the eastern conference???

Miklo I like the idea of having categories for cap management, contending, and building for the future. I don't know about Roster management though. I think building for the future would take into account the age of your players and contending would take into account the talent. I think roster management might be redundant. What does everyone else think?

So phungk I agree, it's a good idea to look into the general practice of scoring and who will be judges.

Risensun it's funny that's the one category I'm not in love with either. Maybe pop that one out and give a bit more focus to building for the future, so that your combined building for the future/contending scores sort of imply your roster management skills.

More opinions needed on all of this! I'm just compiling, not creating any rules so speak up :D

Didn't I get the last pick last year during the yahoo thing also?

Nah just kidding I like it that way because I can pick twice rather than having to wait around again

Lets get this bad boy started. 50 points for the Ring, that's my only suggestion. Oh and how are points rewarded for coaching?

Ok, 50 for contending it is. So then maybe we cut out roster management and up the points for building for the future and cap management - then we either add a coaching score or just include the coach decision when judging the other categories (having Phil Jackson automatically boosts the contending category, etc).

So

Contending 50
Building for the future 15-20
Cap management 15-20
Coaching - either separate and worth like 10 points, or just have judges factor it into the other categories (a coach who's good with young players should add building for the future, Phil should add contending, etc).

What do you think?

EDIT: and yeah, DirtyDez after you finalize what I listed here and if anyone else chimes in, we can go ahead and get rolling!

I see a lot of peeps make their signature their team, could be a good way of tracking it also?

So just make your sig your depth chart basically

9th pick...I like...

Going to have to get out of the fantasy NBA mindset haha

On second though I might be interested in trading either pick #30 or #31

Yeah that's what a lot of the Knicks people do. Since there are so many sig violations on the GB, I was asked politely to keep my sig to an image + 1 line of text to set an example, so I may not be able to do it

Well even though we haven't 100% decided on scoring we know what's involved, I see no reason why we can't start drafting unless anyone is opposed?

I might be interested in trading the 12th pick and 49th pick.
