Big Trade supposedly going down
From Chad Ford on twitter:
Breaking: Hornets, Rockets, Pacers & Nets working on 4 team deal. Ariza to NO. C. Lee to HOU. Collison & Posey to IND. Murphy to NJ.
That is probably the dumbest trade I have seen proposed this year.
You guys lose a great young pg for a guy who did nothing last year and when CP3 leaves after next year (which he will, wishful thinking wont change that fact) then you are left with nothing.
I just dont get it. Even freeing up Poseys capspace doesn't really do much unless I am missing something.

Lateral move at best. There has to be something else in the background, maybe they're clearing capspace to try and convince Melo to come to NO instead of Paul going to the Knicks? Of course if they lose Paul then they're effed.

Re: Big Trade supposedly going down
I don't think the Hornets come out that great with this one. Ariza's numbers are slightly deceiving. He can't really shoot, can't create well, doesn't have much in ball handling skills, and isn't really a scorer.
He gives the Hornets an improvement defensively, and his athletic ability is nice and he can get some finishes from Paul, though not really any more than Julian right is capable of, he's just better at the straight drive after receiving the ball on the perimeter.
Last season though he had a PER of 13.3 and a TS% of .488. His points per 36 was just 14.7 PPG, decent, but nothing special. The impressive thing was his increase to 3.8 APG while not really going up much in his TPG, that is promising, but Ariza is a role player who is seemingly a poor shooter from everywhere even though he's improved as a 3PT shooter (.334% is not anything special).
I think the Hornets are capable of getting better for Collison.

Shades of Cleveland making moves to keep LBJ...I don't like this trade for NO.
Should have kept DC.

Re: Big Trade supposedly going down
Sorry, guys. Hopefully there's more to this than meets the eye. Terrible expenditure of a great young trade asset, mind-boggling from my (neutral) perspective.
@Staruk, Ariza isn't even a Mo Williams or Antawn Jamison. And Houston doesn't need him. Hard to believe it took Collison (via C Lee) to pry him away. And the Posey contract wasn't that much a killer.

Yea, it really wasn't especially when considering that next season he would be an expiring contract.

And you guys were already under the tax with the Mo Peterson + no.11 dump (which probably didn't tickle CP's fancy much either...)

Re: Big Trade supposedly going down
Spurs fan here, I have a lot of respect for the Hornets (especially since that 7-game series). You guys get the shortest stick out of that trade, seriously. You get an upgrade for Posey, Ariza is basically his younger version but you give up Darren Collison whose upside is ridiculous (not exactly upside, he is already a great PG). I know what he did as a starter last season unlike many others (I saw someone claiming in your forum he had an unimpressive rookie season and I was like... what? really?) and I couldn't imagine that you'd give him up in such a trade. It really hurts to see it but probably even more signs that your FO isn't interested in winning and obviously keeping CP3 will be nearly impossible. And BTW Indiana get a starting PG and now have a logjam of swingmen so they will most likely have another deal coming up before the season starts.

Yeah, this trade doesn't make sense at all. Maybe if Paul is announced as having signed an extension. But he hasn't, probably won't and I can't see how Ariza for Posey and Collison makes NOHo significantly better, if at all.

As a Wizards fan I sypothize with you as I know what it's like when your owner makes crappy trades. CWebb for Mitch Richmond...Foye/Miller for Rubio...
This trade stinks.

What Ariza did last year isn't that relative since he was asked to be a playmaker there. He was a lot more efficient next to Kobe and should be even more efficient next to Paul. And he killed it in the '09 playoffs.
Damn good defender too.

Re: Big Trade supposedly going down
Overpaid Mo Pete.
Gave Peja a max deal.
Overpaid Posey.
This team is so desperate to improve, that they thing making any move is a good move. And that's just the thought behind this deal. They dump a bad contract (which they were responsible for), and trade a young potential star for what they perceive to be their solution to the wing deficiency on this team. This short-sighted move will come back and bite them in the ass.
They think that making this move makes the team better? How? Short term: they improve their wing defense and deep shooting. In the process, they also give up a key backup and potential star PG who would help ease the burden on CP, which is why they got him in the first place. Now, what was a serious problem with this team is now back: the huge dependence on Chris Paul for this team to be competitive.
Paul had to play 35-40 minutes EVERY NIGHT in order for this team to stay competitive, because nobody off the bench could run the offense and produce, so what happened was that any lead evaporated, and Paul had to be in the game for them to have a shot at winning. This heavy load took its toll on his body, which is why he's so often injured and worn out come playoff time. This problem would have been solved with the additional talent of Collison because he could step in and run the offense and produce, at least enough to give CP a rest. Also, once CP leaves in two years, which he will, Collison could step in and be the starter. No more.
Now, the short-sightedness and poor decision making of the franchise will prove disastrous. Not only will adding a BENCH/ROLE PLAYER do nothing to make this team better, but it cost them the future of the PG position which will see them lost BOTH Paul and Collison when Paul leaves. And then they will be trying to get rid of Ariza in the last year of his deal. Great job hornets. Jesus Christ, I could do a better job than you clowns.

Every star player plays 35 to 40 minutes a night. CP played more or less the same amount of minutes as Durant, Wade, Bron, ect.

Traded the wrong PG.
Zach Randolph + Kevin Durant >>>>>>> Greg Oden. Bob Whitsitt>>>>>> Kevin Pritchard.

Ariza is going to shoot lights out with Paul.
Think we could have gotten more for Collison, but getting rid of Posey's contract for someone useful wasn't going to be easy.
We still have Peja's huge expiring deal though, and 5 million for Songaila.
