Trade Kabs and Grabo and second rounder to Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal and that kid Sneep.

Re: Kaberle
Down to the wire here, should be very interesting to see if he is dealt/what we're getting. Here is the latest from a reputable source (since there's been so much BS spewed the last few days about Kabby):
Dreger:
# BTW. I was told Toronto declined that offer. half a minute ago via web
One team presented an interesting offer. A player and a pick IF Kaberle signs an ext. If Kaberle becomes a ufa, the Leafs send a pick back less than a minute ago via web
I'm back. Sort of. Leafs says deals are improving, but there is nothing on the table they're willing to accept for Kaberle. Tick Tock. about 1 hour ago via web

Re: Kaberle
And much like I expected, Kaberle goes nowhere. Burke played the media and the fans for fools and worst of all, pissed off Kaberle and his agent in the process would could backfire if he intends to try and re-sign him. What a mess.
Burke essentially screwed himself over when he signed/traded for his entire defense corps, because everyone in the league knew he had to/wanted to move Kaberle afterwards. So in came all the low ball deals which of course Burkie was too good to take. If any of the packages that were offered are true (Setoguchi/Benn & Ribiero/Upshall & Turris), then Burke is an absolute moron for not taking one of them.

Re: Kaberle
It's painfully obvious none of those offers ever came to Burke. An insider on another forum I post on said LA came to the Leafs with a conrete offer of Moller and a 2nd rounder. People definitely overrated the return we would get by moving Kaberle.
At this point, I'm obviously disappointed with the way this has played out, but I still believe Kaberle loves Toronto and I would love for him to be part of this team moving forward. But you've gotta think he's going to be demanding a full NTC with that contract extension. Moving Kaberle was never a necessity and in my opinion shouldn't have even been on the priority list for Burke (at least not now). A defense corps of Phaneuf/Kaberle/Komisarek/Schenn/Gunnarson/Beauchemin is beastly however expensive it may be. We haven't even given that group a chance to play together properly, so I hope we do start the season with that team on defense. As for the offense, it's still looking extremely weak, so we've honestly gotta pray that Kadri and a few of our other prospects pan out.

Re: Kaberle
I think Burke did need to move Kaberle if even that Moller offer came in (though I understand hoping for more). The Leafs aren't contenders and won't be for a long time. There is no point to keeping players around who'll be well past their primes when they even remotely have a shot at doing something great in the playoffs. Win-Now attitudes can often result in Lose-Later situations. Sad thing is Winning-Now is virtually impossible for the team as it stands, so their running the risk of losing-now and losing later. Even if they squeak into the playoffs (or even win a round), who cares? It'll take the fluke of all flukes to move beyond that point and the performance isn't likely to be repeatable.

Beacuse I am bitter of what happened last night I'll compare this to the contract renewal of Carey Price...
Gauthier essentially screwed himself over when he traded Halak because Price's agent knew he had to/wanted to resign Price afterwards. So in came the high contract demands which of course Gauthier couldn't afford to take.
it's a stretch, I know but I'm just having fun with ya b/c your a habs fan on a Leafs forum. In reality it's probably premature to know how this will turn out. For all we know, Rick Curran and Kaberle could be pissed enough that they request a trade, Kabs resigns, we trade another D, we trade Kabs at the trade deadline (ha!)...I don't know anymore b/c I thought Burke would've taken anything (Malone) for Kabs just to start fresh.
Plan A didn't pan out for Burke but I'm willing to wait and see what plan B is before calling it a failure.

Burke shot himself in the foot by dealing those two 1st rounders and the 2nd to Boston. I don't think he is thinking 'win-now' but if they squeak into the playoffs and keep their current young core together it means that Boston doesn't get another high 1st rounder but rather a mid 1st rounder.

I can't argue with that, but Burke missed a big time chance by not moving Kaberle. I'm still positive that Price ends up re-signing in Montreal. Only thing stopping it from happening is Price wants 9/3 and the Habs want 5/2.

Re: Kaberle
Kaberle is very overrated.
guess Burke just found that out.
Now the Leafs go into next season with too many defencemen, not enough offensively-gifted defencemen and not enough offense to scare any team

No doubt, MTL will get Price signed and TOR will do their best not to come 29th again

Re: Kaberle
I think Toronto will do a bit better this year, but they will be ****ing horrible offensively. Especially when you give the fact that they were horrible to begin to season and then got worse as they gave away all their scoring. Now they don't even have those options from the start.

What exactly did we lose? Ponikarovsky, Stajan, Hagman? Are Versteeg, potentially Kadri, Bozak (actually starting year here) and Armstrong not enough to replace that scoring? I mean I'm not predicting a good year for the Leafs, but I really don't think we can be any worse than we were last year.

Re: Kaberle
Not any better, not any worse. Kadri's still a little bit away from putting up big numbers on a team consistently.
