Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
Beat me by a nose.
I don't hate the move. I love his upside but next year's draft could be awesome and we'll get a pick in the middle of round one for not signing Covey.
But throw first round cash at Gibson and see if he'll sign.

Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
We are willing to give $10 million a year to pitchers like Suppan and Wolf, but not $2 million in signing bonus to a young pitcher. Why would he want to come here when this team showed no sign of wanting him?

What makes you think we weren't willing to pay him? The Brewers have been more than happy to pay their draft picks reasonably well in recent years. I think this has more to do with Covey's side of things than with the Brewers.

Apparently he has been diagnosed with diabetes which may have something to do with it.

Not if it is serious and/or he is going to give up baseball and focus on the rest of his life instead... I'm sure this wasn't a financial decision.

Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
I'm not anywhere close to a medical professional, but it would have to be a very severe case of diabetes to keep him from playing baseball if he has a desire to keep playing. It would seem unlikely to me that anything that severe would just pop up out of the blue since the Brewers selected Covey in the draft.

Haudricourt
Father of Brewers' first-round draft pick Dylan Covey confirms to me that diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes is why he opted not to sign.
Haudricourt
With diagnosis of diabetes, the Covey family decided it would be best for Dylan to stay nearby at U. of San Diego rather than go into minors

"This was crushing, to both us and the Brewers," said Darrell Covey. "We were all in shock. It had nothing to do with money."

Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
twirls: you have frequently said melvin doesn't draft our players.
So who would you blame for the brewers drafting Covey?
The brewers are built by the success of their farm system. We need to sign our first round pick, and we also need to make smart choices with our top pick.
not only did we not do our homework on Covey (diagnosed with diabetes - there were big red flags in his senior year with his loss of velocity, etc. and many ranking services dropped his draft stock considerably before the draft).
but we also didn't sign our first round pick, and we were hagling over about $300,000. if he were offered his $2 mil, several months ago, he would have signed.
I personally blame Melvin for both his selection and not doing diligent research on him, and also Melvin for not signing our first round pick when we need all the talent we can draft.
what happened to the we'll have him under our control theme melvin was talking about last week when he traded for that young 28 year old outfielder - Dickerson??
if we are going to build this team around our own draft picks, we need to actually sign them - especially our top pick. We desparately needed to draft a future ace starter, and we got nothing.
I blame melvin.
twirls , since you like to say Melvin doesn't do our draft, who do you blame? in my opinion, both people should be fired before the sun comes up !!!
Coming away from this draft without signing our # 1 pick is unacceptable - particulary since several of our other top picks this year were considered as reaches by many intelligent baseball scouts/analysists. Did jack take our smarter scouts with him as well?
others might say it's not the end of the world. but basically for the brewers - it is the end of the world. Our draft picks are our prime source for acquiring talent. we cna't compete for free agents. and you have to have talent to be able to trade for talent. if we have no young talent, our hope to acquire future talent either via trade or player development is nil.
melvin's actions essentually threw away the june draft. it's ok for the yankees not to have a first round pick. THEY HAVE OTHER VIABLE AVENUES FOR PLAYER ACQUISITION. but we are the brewers.
TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE !!!!

Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
I have nothing to say about the stupid idiotic post above so all I will say is that post is terrible.
The kid got diagnosed with diabetes during a team arranged physical, how about some well wishes for him?
Baseball is just a stupid game, its nothing compared to your life.

You are right, Chuck. Nevertheless, it isn't life or death as far as we know, he is going to go to U of San Diego and play ball. I surely wish the guy the best, and from the tweets the family seems like a class act.
Nevertheless, some of MajorDad's points are true. We do need to build our team through the draft and this is a blow.

I agree, we need to build our team through the draft, I don't think when some kid decides not to sign because he wants to stay closer to his family to deal with his newfound diabetes is the place to express that opinion, especially in the extremely aggressive approach that MajorDad takes with pretty much all of his posts.

Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
Yup. The let-down from missing out on Covey is a distant second to how terrible I feel for the kid just learning he's got a life changing disease.
As for the Brewers, they did everything right in this process. The money wasn't an issue, they were the ones who arranged for the physical that revealed the disease and even the Covey family had nothing but good things to say about the organization. In the end it came down to a scared kid who decided to go to school close to home. I can't blame him for that.

Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
I'm absolutely fine with not signing him for both the Brewers and the Covey family.
For the Brewers, next year's draft is amazing and we're going to get two top 20 picks (not sure what other picks have done so I'm not sure where exactly our pick will fall.)
For the Coveys. I absolutely agree. He needs to get his diabetes under control and it's probably best if he has his family nearby to help him deal with it.
Side note: STFU, Reed.

Re: Dylan Covey opts not to sign with Brewers
Type 1 Diabetes is completely life altering at best, and life threatening at worst. I wish Covey nothing but the best, and I agree, he's making a sound choice. It's going to be challenging enough for him to get this under control, and begin to move forward with his family around him, let alone on his own in the Minors.
