Clips' Gomes, Foye out to change Sterling's view of them

Post#1 » by mkwest » Sat Aug 21, 2010 7:57 am

"Yeah, I heard about it," Foye said of Sterling's dismissive comment. "I really can't get into it. I've had a couple of people mention it to me. All I can do is go out there and do well. I've got to handle my business. Can't really worry about no one else's."

"They were a team that showed a lot of interest and came after me really hard," Foye said, noting the slightly greater enthusiasm of Clippers' GM Neil Olshey and coach Vinny Del Negro. "There were like six or seven teams in the mix. You don't want to go to a team that's, 'Ah, he's our fourth option.' They showed the most interest. That's why I ran with it."

But to another dismal losing situation? "That's how my story was written, to be like that," Foye said. "But you never know, this team can be really good. You just have to go in there and work at it. You hear guys around the league talk about what they do in the summers and that's the main thing, just work ethic. As a leader, you can't give in."

People familiar with Gomes' game often have seen him as a blue-collar player who would be more valuable on a better team. With San Antonio, Utah or the current Celtics, he could focus on filling a role, however tangible or intangible. Losing teams need more than Gomes alone can bring. But he remains relentlessly upbeat, whether talking about the talent in place for the Clippers or even their owner's snarky comment.

"I'd read online somewhere that he'd done an interview," Gomes said. "This business is built on marketability -- it's built on talent as well -- but I'm honest with myself that I'm not that [superstar] player. It's his franchise. He wants the players that give him the best opportunity to win. If they had gotten LeBron James or if they had gotten Mike Miller or Josh Childress or whoever ... I don't know what to say about that.

"I just have to prove and show 'em that I am a good player and that I can help the franchise. So maybe he doesn't know about me as a player. For Randy or myself, we didn't go to UCLA or USC where he might have known about us."

It's a shame these guys have been with this dreaded franchise for barely over a month and already have to deal with this. I hope Sterling's rant encourages fans to be even more supportive to make up for the owners lack of support.

I have to give credit to Gomes and Foye for both aiming to remain focused and to not let his comments sway their performance or effort. Players should not have to deal with this. It does not do any kind of good when you have a franchise that is trying to change its image and perception around the league. It also gives a reason for the current players to try to get out as soon as they can if they feel that they are not going to be respected or appreciated. What does Blake Griffin think? Last summer they (Sterling, Blake, Dunleavy, etc.) were at some fundraiser and Sterling was pretty much asking if there were any Spirit members there who wanted to take their tops off. It's pathetic.

Imo, Sterling has yet to grasp that people are human beings that deserve to be respected as opposed to just being a means to an end. That is what has gotten him into trouble in the NBA and in the courts. He may have preferred to have signed a superstar player as any team owner, team, fanbase would prefer, but that's not what happened. He hired Olshey, Del Negro and co. to make the basketball decisions. He should be more trusting of the decisions that they make, since they actually have basketball knowledge. Then to bump his gums to Simers of all people is just plain idiotic.

If he's not going to make an effort to show human decency, he needs to fall back and be quiet. He embarrasses himself and everything Clipper when he speaks.

He was upset that the team couldn't sign a big name free agent and said that he doesn't know who Gomes and Foye are.
