Cox vs. Griffin (Jose Bautista on Steroids?)

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Sun Aug 22, 2010 5:41 pm

For the following unpopular question, blame Major League baseball and all the nonsense it has spewed over the past decade.

Don't blame me.

When it comes to Jose Bautista, how is it exactly that at the age of 29 he's suddenly become the most dangerous power hitter in baseball?

Chance? Healthy living? Diet? New contact lenses? Comfortable batting gloves?

Anyone reading about the Roger Clemens perjury case this week, which of course brings up all of baseball's tawdry steroid history, should at least be willing to wonder about Bautista's sudden transformation into the dinger king.

This is a player, don't forget, who never hit 20 homers before in a Major League season. Some of that was due to a lack of opportunity, although in 532 at-bats in '07 he managed only 15 round trippers.

As of Sunday morning, he had 38 homers, six more than the great Albert Pujols, seven more than Miguel Cabrera and Adam Dunn.

Really? Quite a story, huh?

Makes one remember Brady Anderson, who went from 16 homers to 50 and then back to 18 right smack dab in the middle of baseball's steroid problem.

Things happen in baseball, I guess.

The great news for Bautista is that these numbers will surely net him an enormous increase on his current $2.4 million salary when his contract expires. That would motivate any player to find a way to improve his stats.

The Blue Jays, we know, have quietly become known as a bit of a nest for alleged steroid abusers over the years. Clemens played here. Gregg Zaun has been implicated. Ditto for Troy Glaus.

Damien Cox wouldn't know a baseball if it hit him in the nuts, assuming he even has any.

Yes you have to wonder at least in the back of your mind if Joey Bats is on HGH, but drawing a connection to Greg Zaun and Roger Clemens is stupid. Nothing to do with J-Beard at all.

And trying to be an optimist, J-Bizzle doesn't look physically different than he did before unlike Brady Anderson whose face doubled in size over one off-season. Plus Joe Buzz is getting more at bats this year than ever before - it's not like he's had 500+ at bats a season for 5 years and he's suddenly departing from a well established norm.

Cox is a crusty moron. The Star attracts some real winners for their sports pages. Griffin, Cox, and that stupid chick Mary something or other. All they need to do is hire Al Strachan and Marty York and they'd be all set

Cox all "hard-hitting" and everything....Image

Always the guy brave enough to "ask the question", but not brave enough to make the accusation. If you really wanted to know, how about a little "investigative reporting"? Too hard?

Cox: Is Jose Bautista on Steroids?

Post#7 » by KG1585 » Sun Aug 22, 2010 10:34 pm

And now comes Bautista. Blue Jay fans will, of course, angrily respond to the suggestion that everything isn't on the up-and-up, just as I remember getting bushels of bitter emails from baseball fans when questioning Mark McGwire's open use of androstenedione back when he was smashing Roger Maris' record.

My favourite line was always how steroids couldn't help a baseball player hit home runs. Too funny.

Maybe Bautista is just one of the great individual stories in baseball this season. This could be his career year, and he could deserve nothing but credit and praise.

But the fact is that baseball's history, and the Nixonian way in which the Selig administration and the players association have chosen to deal with the steroid issue over the years, should compel any intelligent person to wonder when a player suddenly starts displaying abilities never before seen in his career.

Blue Jay fans won't like it. But you've got to at least ask the question when it comes to Jose Bautista.

For the fact that we do, blame baseball.

Meh, Maybe he's on something, maybe he's not. couldn't care less. Steroid use in Canada is legal. Only reason people care about it is because of the American media's brainwashing bs.

I think if anyone took PEDs at this point in time after all we've been through in recent years on the subject, then they are a combination of incredibly brave or incredibly stupid. I don't think Beastista is on anything because he started to show his power not long after he arrived in town. All it could be is a tweak in the swing.

Bautista could very well be on something (though if he is, he's likely been taking PEDs far longer than just this year), but that isn't a justification for writing an article this pointlessly stupid.

Too each there own I suppose, but I wholeheartedly disagree.

Whether it's "legal" to own or take steroids in Canada is irrelevant to me. There's a key part of the word PED for me. Performance Enhancing.
If you are taking a substance which allows you to attain levels you otherwise never would have, that's cheating period.

I subscribe to the theory of guilty until proven innocent in regards to baseball's steroid era. I would LOVE to see baseball go and completely wipe out the records of Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, A-Rod and any other admitted steroid user. Which is a shame because these guys would all have been hall of famers without PED's. But nonetheless, I think that would be awesome for baseball to really put the hammer down and show there serious about cleaning up the sport and setting the record straight.

One question that I have, that basically summarizes it all for me is;
In 1988, what happened to Ben Johnson?

You can't tell me that a full 22 years after that, with the advancements in PED's in regards to both performance and detection, that they didn't have signifigant impacts on virtually everyone. I think it's cheating, these guys that get caught are a disgrace, and should be banned from the sport, completely written out of the record books no questions asked imo.

So what do you think about diets nutritionally tailored to aid training and performance? Those enhance a player's performance over what they could achieve without them.

How about guys that suddenly declined? Were they on the juice and now off it?

Vernon Wells comes to mind - that guy was cut out of granite until MLB started testing - now he's sporting a slight pot belly and his bat is noticeably slower.

What about Dustin McGowan? The guy used to throw electric stuff effortlessly. Now he just goes from one injury to the next.

I think they need to start testing everybody both before and after every game - and in between double headers. They should have labs in every stadium.

This was going to be my point. No, you don't "just gotta ask" a question. You have to do some research before you effortlessly defame one of the only local heroes we have left in this city. Did Cox ever ask this question while the current generation of hockey players are 50 lbs heavier than the previous generation? Did Cox look at earlier pics of Bautista and compare them to today? Did he, y'know get sources in the locker room? Access is supposed to be the big advantage of beat grunts over bloggers, at least per The Doug.

Cox is a puck-head troll.
