Pacers' plans for the future hit snag with Stephenson

Posted Aug 20 2010 9:20AM

The summer trade designed to push the Pacers into the future was about a minute old when something happened to dig up the team's ugly past.

At a time when the franchise deserved credit for adding a much-needed piece, the Pacers were listening to disgruntled fans wondering if the team's image of hoarding troublemakers was slowly creeping its way back into the picture.

From Darren Collison, point guard savior ... to guard Lance Stephenson, arrested on assault, menacing and harassment and essentially accused of being a bully. That's how the Pacers' summer went.

Maybe everyone in Indiana should take a deep breath for a few months. Stephenson deserves his day in court. That will arrive Oct. 19, when the second-round pick will appear to address charges that he roughed up the mother of his child. Until then, there's no sense jumping to one conclusion or another. He deserves as much, and so do the Pacers. He could be completely innocent, as his people are saying, or he might be guilty as sin.

I think Lance will either learn from a situation like this, or he will live the rest of his life regretting what could have been.

He needs to wake the f*$k up, get his head out of his ass, and realize the very rare position he is in. As of right now he has already made more money than 98% of us will make in a lifetime, and he hasn't even played in one friggin' game yet.

Lance, for once in your life it wouldn't hurt to show the world that your IQ is above 75.

If he doesn't play for the Pacers, then I hope like hell that his NBA career is over. Call me selfish, and I'll call Lance selfish.

Defending himself? He's 6-5. He tossed a woman down a flight of stairs, then went down and bashed her head on the bottom step as a follow up.That sounds like a misogynist THUG. He's been previously faced charges of sexual assault on the premises of his high school. Misdemeanor charges? I kind of see a felony here and a very weak case for self defense. His lone hope is if it's all a lie and he was definitely somewhere else.

it's not all a lie, but we only have one side of the story so far. he gets his day in court. even after that he gets a chance with me to show how he deals with the situation. if he does nothing, I'd trade him or take the necessary steps to try and void his contract based upon the personal conduct clause. however, if he shows contrition, enrolls in anger management classes or whatever is appropriate, and accepts whatever penalties the court and the league decides to impose upon him, I'd be willing to give him a chance to put a youthful indiscretion behind him.

okay, youthful indiscretion may not be the right choice of words. I'm not trying to belittle what he is accused of doing. I'm just trying to emphasize that boys his age do stupid things. I know my kids did. still do, for that matter, even though our "boys" are a decade older than Lance.

The fact is she was coming home at five in the morning, drunk off her ass, while Lance stayed at home with the kid. He was supposedly upset with her and they argued. How do we know she wasn't so drunk that she fell down the stairs? How do we know it wasn't a setup? How do we know it wasn't an accident? How do we know that she didn't hit her head from the fall, and not him continuing to attack her? How do we know that she didn't attack him first, and through the course of defending himself, she fell down the stairs?

There are two sides to every story so you should only believe half of what you read. As Scoot alluded to, the report is accurate in that the police wrote the report how it was given to them; but as Jowglenn countered, the information only supports her claims and not his.

He needs to have his day in court ... period.
