So I'm trying to cut soda out of my diet. I've pretty much been drinking at least 1-2 20oz bottles of Mountain Dew a day for the past 7-8 years and it's really f'ing hard to quit. I've switched to diet soda for now but have had numerous people tell me that diet soda is even worse for you than regular soda. Is that fact or fiction and if anyone has done something like this what alternative beverages did you switch to? (I don't drink coffee at all so that's not an option.)

I don't see how it can be "even worse" than regular. Unless they're talking about aspartame or whatever it is. In any case, you can get drinks that don't contain that.

I used to drink a lot of Coke Zero, then switched to Diet Coke but that still has caffeine in it so it wasn't really helping at all. I drink two things now, one is a diet ginger beer I found that uses splenda and has no caffeine and another thing I do is buy certain diet cordial/mix drinks and use soda water instead of regular water. Tastes just like Fanta or Sprite or whatever depending on what flavor you use.

It depends what your fixation with soda is, the taste and sugar or the caffeine. If it is only the caffeine, you could go either Five Hour Energy or caffeinated water (Water Joe). I'm sure there are other things like teas that have caffeine and less sugar/calories as well. I know what you mean though. I wake up at 6 AM 7 days a week. I crave caffeine. I'm trying to keep it to one soda per day and I do about 95% of the time.

Speaking of eating and working out, I was reading about Michael Phelps diet when he's training:

Breakfast: Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. Two cups of coffee. One five-egg omelet. One bowl of grits. Three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar. Three chocolate-chip pancakes.

Lunch: One pound of enriched pasta. Two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread. Energy drinks packing 1,000 calories.

Dinner: One pound of pasta. An entire pizza. More energy drinks.


Insanity.

Personally I'm concerned about how much I'm going to have to eat (mainly time and money constraints over intake) when I start P90X. I'm looking to tone a bit and add a little muscle, not drop weight. I already burn calories at a ridiculous rate.

That diet is ridiculous. I wouldn't eat that much in a week. It is reassuring though, I eat a lot for breakfast and gradually eat less as the day goes on and he does the same to a stupidly higher extent. I try to have something with sugar in it as well otherwise I get too tired.

If I were you I would just drink a protein shake every day... Mix in some ice cream or yogurt.

If you are worried about not getting enough calories/carbs, just go heavy on the pasta, rice, bread and potatoes in all of your meals.

That's pretty cheap for muscle milk,I see individual serving bottles (12oz I think) at the grocery store and they are like 2.99 each.That's expensive as hell.I never actually tried muscle milk though.

I actually don't take supplements/protein drinks anymore but they are great when you first start working out,they really help speed up you're initial results.

And nothing keeps you more motivated and helps you stay consistent than when you start seeing results,especially when you first start out.

And BTW, I highly highly recommend Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal Bars,they usually have them on sale (like 3/$4.00) at Woodman's and they have like 10 variety's.They actually taste really good too.

Make sure the stuff you get is made from a reputable source as they are not tested to FDA standards. Including herbal supplements some have been tested positive for lead, arsenic, mercury, and steroids.

Consumer Reports says these three products are of special concern:

* EAS Myoplex Original Rich Dark Chocolate Shake has an average of 16.9 micrograms of arsenic in three servings -- more than the 15 micrograms a day that is the proposed USP limit. It has an average of 5.1 micrograms of cadmium for three servings -- above the USP limit of 5 micrograms a day.
* Muscle Milk chocolate powder, at three servings, contained all four of the metals, and three metals were found at a level that was among the highest of all 15 products tested. Cadmium levels were 5.6 micrograms -- above the 5-microgram limit. Lead was 13.5 micrograms -- above the USP limit of 10 micrograms. The arsenic averaged 12.2 micrograms -- near the 15-microgram daily USP limit.
* Muscle Milk vanilla crème had 12.2 micrograms of lead per three servings -- above the 10-microgram daily limit. It has 11.2 micrograms of arsenic -- close to the 15-microgram daily limit.

Good post and this is deff something everyone should keep in mind..

One of the reasons I stopped taking supplements is for this very reason.Like you mentioned supplements aren't regulated by the FDA so they can get away with putting bad stuff in them.

I still think supplements are great when you first start out and I don't think they are that bad,my advice/opinion is that you shouldn't take them over long periods of time.

Unless you're trying to be a hardcore body builder you really won't need supplements after the first year of starting your workout routine.You can maintain your results and still have steady gains by eating the right kinds of foods.

Supplements are just a good temporary boost to get you started IMO.

I'd try replacing your soda intake with green teas. You can get flavored versions (peach is my favorite, though that is available as a more expensive white tea), and you can still use like half a packet of sugar if you are craving that.

Buying one of these actually got me off of soda completely because they offer so many quality loose leaf teas to try. I found the various flavored greens to be the best (apricot, citron, and vanilla).

The interesting thing about green teas is that they do contain caffeine, but they also contain a natural chemical that negates the over stimulating effects of caffeine. Green tea has also shown to have many other health benefits, including aiding in weight loss.

so, what do you guys that don't have time to cook anything eat for breakfast?

i love these kashi dark chocolate coconut fruit & grain bars

120 calories, 3.5g of fat, 1.5g saturate, 0 trans, 1 gram each of polyunsat. and monounsat, 50mg of sodium, 21g of carbs 4g fiber, 7g of sugar and 4g of protein

I always get a bagel or low fat muffin from Dunkin Donuts, a egg white sandwich from Subway or a couple of cups of Dole fruit. :D

Those coconut ones are good (Kashi bar), but I prefer the chocolate raspberry. :droop:

I like the Western egg-white omelet sandwich from Subway some mornings.

I've got breakfast down to a science though so making something isn't time consuming. In a blender goes a cup of frozen berries I keep in a tupperware container. I add a sliced up banana. One cup of Bolthouse Farms carrot juice, 1/2 cup Bolthouse farms green goodness juice. Blend until it's liquefied and I put it in a tall glass to take with me on the way to work. I rinse the blender before I finish so it's ready the next morning. The whole process takes about three minutes.

About 170 calories worth of almonds (roughly 2 dozen) and an apple or banana for breakfast.

I strongly suggest everyone in this thread buy some almonds and count out 2 dozen, because you'll be shocked at how full you'll feel with only 170-180 calories worth of nuts. Sometimes, I can't even eat a full two dozen if I really chew the first dozen up really well and try to eat the next dozen about 5 minutes later. Almonds are absurd as a staple of a diet, IMO (beans are also way up there, but are more inconvenient to eat).

Almonds basically rule the world more than any human could hope to achieve (including LeBron, MJ, Obama, and GW). Even Osama has nothing on almonds, IMHO. In the old Celebrity Death Match on MTV, a single almond could take on all comers and destroy, IMO.

Almonds FTMFW.
