What need Deron to be considered better than Stockton?

Post#1 » by FJS » Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:34 pm

What do you think Deron has to accomplish to be considered better than Stockton?
I'm not talking about NBA all around fans, because they use to consider Stockton not better than Nash, Payton, Kidd, Isiah or Frazier, I'm talking about us, Utah Jazz fans.

Honestly I can't see anyone ever beating Stockton's records. So the only path Deron can take to surpass Stockton is the road to a championship. A championship would convince a lot of people, 2 championships would be tough to deny, 3 championships would do it for sure. For many, however, there is no chance of Deron passing Stockton. By the very fact that Stockton and Malone kept this franchise alive when there was a chance of it dying, Deron will never surpass Stockton. In the same respect that Karl will never be better than John, and John will never be better than Karl. Deron could some day place himself in the same tier as S&M, but surpassing either doesn't seem likely.

I dont think thats possible. Even if Deron wins three titles, as mencioned above, it wouldnt make him better. A title is very subjective. There are several players who have won titles, and they werent even All Stars, or starters for that matter.

For Deron be better, he has to have a better career regarding poinst, assists, steals, and durability.

Its not gonna happen.

To me the question isn't whether Deron can pass Stock, but rather if he can pass Malone. Championships speak volumes. Anything less that a title and he won't make it, but win at least one and play here the majority of his career (with no sour grapes upon leaving) and he's probably the greatest Jazz man ever.

Nobody is going to pass up John Stockton in Utah Jazz lore. He was literally perfect, I once saw him walk on water and swim on land. His sweat took me higher, to a place where blind can see.

I think a title would do it. Well, for some. A title and 20 years with the Jazz would do it for most.

Not a fair question. Williams still has so much to do just in order to be considered in the same breath with Stockton.
So Deron.... win a couple rings and be the loyal and steady dude running the Jazz for the next decade, and then you will be eligible to such a question.... ok... one title and 9 more years playing 90% of the games is ok I guess...

The passage of time... each new generation of fans contains fewer people who actually saw Stockton play, and history has a way of shaping perception with little regard for reality. Just observe how the passage of time unfathomably shaped the the nation's collective perception of Reagan as one of our greatest presidents.

A little unfair, the Jazz has had many greats in Maravich, Dantley, Stockton and Malone, a title doesn't just put him ahead. Look at Duncan, he's not considered FAR better than Malone by anyone, and the comparison is still made after four titles.

1. Play his entire career with the Jazz
2. Average 20/10 for an 8-year stretch
3. Win two titles
4. Make four All-NBA first teams (Stockton had 2)
5. Finish at least top 5 in the MVP voting a couple of times

If he does all of that, I think you could make the argument.

Tim Duncan is the greatest Center masquerading as a Power Forward to ever play the game.

2 championships whe3re Deron is 1 or 2 will do it. He has no chance of breaking stat records.

No one will ever do more for the Jazz then Stockton and Malone.....However Dwill could get the Jazz on to TV with his game! If he wins 2-3 rings and plays 19 to 20 years with the Jazz then we could argue.

If Deron win's a championship he becomes 1C in the minds of Jazz fans who already have 1A and 1B for Stock and Malone.

He won't come close to the type of longevity and consistency they had, but winning a championship is a game changer.

Right, if the Jazz win ONE tittle I think that Deron will be forever immortalized by the Jazz fan community. If we boil this question way down what we all really want is a tittle. No one will ever be better than John and Karl in our hearts but we all still want a championship. If we have a leader that can do that for us then we will always remember that leader for what he has done.

To say that he will be close to John might be possible statistically but still is a extremely far reach.

God I miss Stockton and Malone.
