A Raptors J. R. Smith addition makes sense...?

Post#1 » by juror1 » Sun Aug 29, 2010 8:29 am

Just thinking that J. R. Smith's value in the league has plummeted, and while there is talk of him being traded, it doesn't seem like anyone is willing to give the Nuggets what they want. Unless some sort of Smith for another disgruntled SG trade goes down (i.e. Rudy Fernandez) it doesn't seem like a trade worth Denver's while will come up.

With this said, I think the majority of this board can attest that the Raptors have enough 'good characters' - practically the entire team - that adding one bad apple probably wouldn't spoil the whole bunch (note: arguable given Turkoglu's stint in Toronto). Anyway, J. R. doesn't seem to be a very well liked guy within the NBA, with a chip off his shoulder and all, no one seems willing to take the risk of picking him up. THough, it seems that for whatever reason Sonny Weems and DeMar DeRozan have befriended J. R., I think that if he were moved to TOronto he would flourish. I've known and been on teams enough times with guys like J. R. (the 'chip on my shoulder, I'm gonna say don't giva***k about what anyone thinks, but I really do care' kinda guy... I've been that guy) that I can tell you if you put him in a situation where he feels accepted and appreciated, he'll be alright. Toronto could be that situation.

The trouble is whether there will be playing time for him. I think if he were brought in, DeMar moved to SF and Linas and Weems coming off the bench might cause a log jam. Although if the team can successfully trade away some point guards, or trade away Barbosa in exchange for Smith, I think things could work out just fine.

What do you think?

We're a bad team without J.R Smith. Would we be worse with him? It's a risk that I would be willing to take. (Swap Barbosa or Smith)

But I agree with you, Smith has had his days

They're kind of the same type of player though. I don't think that trade would do anything unless they want to give us a draft pick to take him off their hands. A 1st round draft pick could be huge if Melo leaves.

A Magic fan here and I guarantee you that you will not want this player on your team.

He is a bigger dirt bag than anyone this league has ever seen.

If we're looking to develop DeMar/Sonny then there's no point in bringing in JR. Barbosa is a much better veteran presence and brings the same scoring punch off the bench without the baggage.

No

I think it's possible to be intense without being stupid. Hee has a kind of intensity that is not good for the team.
"But the thing is, maybe I do want to wake up one morning and say, `Baby, let's go to the Bahamas. Today.' That costs money. So what if I want to do that?

I know that's he's hard to ignore because of his sheer offensive talents - but we do not want this guy, can't stress this enough.

I'll take him off Denver's hands in a second..if they take Jose and his contract off ours. That is the only reason I would take that cancer on this team as a salary dump.

The idea that " if you put him in a situation where he feels accepted and appreciated, he'll be alright" is a joke right? This is his 4th team and like 4th coach. He's had some of the better coaches in the NBA and they can't control him. He's been on teams with Champion veteran leaders (Billups) and they can't control him. He recently choked a teamate. The guy has serios mental issues. If we did trade for him and his contract its very likley he'd never see the floor becuase he's such a cancer. Lottery bound young teams with weak lame duck coaches are not the place to try to rehab a guy like smith.

I don't want anything to do with JR. He'll take away playing time from DD. He's my future SG going forward, not JR.

Getting JR would set the Raptor franchise back - not forward

Avoid him like the plague

Hah! We have a team full of impressionable, young kids. JR Smith would be the worst addition imaginable.

Unlike Barbosa who plays a similar game, JR is an expiring contract. I would want him on this team for that reason only. I'm hoping for a top 3 pick.

There is too much risk to this guy to take a flyer on him. He really needs strong leadership to keep him in check. It took both Billups and Karl to keep Smith mildly in check ...

That's my feeling, too. At the first hint of trouble you'd be happy to waive Smith. And my standard for trouble would be real low, he wouldn't have to be arrested. It would all be about salary relief.

We had JR Smith in Marco. We gave him away without batting an eyelash. I don't think we're getting JR.

And yes, I know JR is better than Marco, but at least Marco is paid less and is less of a chemistry concern. All that while he shot the same (if not better) percentages from the field and scored more PPG when he got at least 24+ minutes per game.
