I'm not buying this Yi hype. Ted can say whatever he wants but until I see him do something useful on the court, he is still a scrub in my opinion.

Ahh, Greece was missing baby shaq and another guy whose name I didn't recognize. Still, those are decent numbers against anyone. I'm still not going into the season with any expectations though...

How many times do the Wiz have Greece on the schedule this year??
Also, if that Shortstankus dude was playing, would have been a completely different story.

Re: Yi scored 26, 14 rebounds vs. Greece
Why the pessimism on this board? For a low risk, high reward type of player, this is a good sign. The knock on Yi in previous years has not been his skill or athleticism but rather his aggression and confidence. If Yi has regained the mental edge to attack the basket and play a PF game then why not be more optimistic? Besides, I'm sure that if he had put up 9 pts and 4 rebounds in that game, people on this board would be complaining.

Re: Yi scored 26, 14 rebounds vs. Greece
^ I think what it means is that if Yi gets hurt and we're struggling, we can just say "look, you can't expect much with Yi out, right?". That was Miller's early role, took a lot of pressure off.
Another option would be that Yi will regularly test the structural integrity of the scorers table by banging his knee into it while diving for loose balls. Miller was our man in the field there. That could fit in with the new paradigm where quality control is vigorously investigated at Verizon too with the latches on the toilet stalls, Ketchup dispensers and culinary contributions of the resident rodent population all being points of inquiry. So, Yi's job is to pick up where Miller left it with the scorers table.
I think the "drastic midseason haircut guy" position is right out with Yi already well cropped. Nick with an even pointier Mohawk is probably our best hope there.
But I digress....

There ya go. We went over this in another thread. You're right.
It COULD be that for him. And that is all you can ask a GM to do for a team. Line up the players that he can that fit in short and long term budget who may have good to great upside.

Yi is not this type of player. I'd say he's more like medium risk, low reward.
Medium risk because, while he himself is not much of a risk, there is a very legit risk that the couple million in cap space we lost with him could be put to better use at some point before the end of the season. Low reward because he's been in the league three years, and in those three years, played very consistently from beginning to end; there hasn't been gradual improvement or anything like that in his game. And that play has been below average, 15-20 MPG backup level. So, not a lot of likely reward there. Basically, he looks like another Randy Foye.

Agreed. NJ traded him for nothing because they wanted cap space to sign superstars, but Washington assumed some risk in taking on the salary of someone who's shown little sign of improvement (though I won't say he can't improve). Getting a 2nd round pick might have made that risk easier to stomach, and NJ has a ton of them. On the other hand, he might end up being himself a trade piece at the deadline.

The risk is low now because of what happened. Look how New Jersey ended up spending that cap space- oh yeah with nothing since LeBron, Wade, and Bosh left the Nets in the dust. If the Wizards really want a 2nd round pick, they can always pick one up with cash. As it stands right now though, the Wizards have enough rookies on this team. What is Yi's salary minus Quinton Ross's salary anyways?

I think it's about 3 mil isn't it? Not the end of the world regardless, and maybe a win if he's dealt at the deadline for something or (shock of all shocks)) develops his game.

Re: Yi scored 26, 14 rebounds vs. Greece
It's zero risk anyway, considering the team had to ink sufficient players to fill a 13 man roster. QRoss would be paid to do nothing, playing behind Gil, Wall, Hinrich, NIck, etc. By contrast Yi can play multiple positions at an area of need (Dray's injury and Javale's foul issues suggest we'll need minutes here, and even resigning Josh doesn't give us great depth at SF since he'll be rehabbing for half the season). Yi saves us the salaries of multiple players even as bench filler. Said it before, Quinton wasn't even versatile at sucking.
