Starting Point Guard is?

Post#1 » by John Stockton » Wed Sep 1, 2010 9:22 am

I'm not trolling, I'm just curious about your roster.

Who is your starting PG? Do you see any deals involving Dampier for a PG after September 13 when Dampier is eligible to be traded? I think that's what the Brown signing indicated.

But for who? Any ideas?

I think we'll have to wait until the end of training camp and the preseason games to find out who the starting PG on opening night will be.

Even then I think our starting PG could change on a weekly or even nightly basis during the regular season, depending on who Larry Brown's latest man crush is on.

I think one thing is certain - we do not have an NBA caliber starting PG on our roster yet, unless there are some big surprises - for instance, DJ makes a quantum leap, or Livingston proves that his robo-knee can hold up for 35 minutes a game. I think the damp deal (or lack thereof) will be the key determining factor. Speculators, like ESPN's Hollinger, would have us looking to be included in the melo bonanza to net a starting PG, which makes a lot of sense. Brooks from Houston was mentioned. If a damp deal doesn't go down, look out. I've seen center-by-committee, but never PG-by-committee.

Not certain at this point. My guess is that Livingston is the starter on opening night.

Edit: if you look at Livingston's late game stats as a starter for washington ... he is clearly starter material.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

^ Agreed about Livingston being starting material. Its just a matter of his knee's durability or lack thereof.

Well according to Ric Bucher who wrote,
"Charlotte is in desperate need of a starting point guard and could offer cap relief, a seemingly attractive thing if Denver is starting over. (In regards to Chauncey Billups)

Based off of this I'd say the starting Point Guard isn't on this team yet. Of the players we do have, I think LB would go with Livingston, unless DJ comes to camp and is playing very well which is very likely since Livingston may not have the laterall quickness to stay in front of DJ.

And if you look at Augustin's averages as a starter when he was given the opportunity to start........................he is clearly starter matieral (and put up better numbers than Livingston!!)

DJ doesn't need some sort of quantum leap, dude could just put up something close to his rookie year starter stats and I think everyone would be happy.

Sherron Collins. Why? No one's mentioned him yet. He's the new David Wesley.

I agree and most likely the dust chip will be used to get one.

No way is DJ an 82 game plus playoffs starting caliber NBA point guard. Dude completely lost his confidence last season so how can management ever rely on him to handle the starting point guard spot. They can't and he will most likely be dealt either with the dust chip or once Livingston proves in camp he's capable of being a quality backup. DJ is so gone unless a miracle happens with him. Doubtful.

Agreed. He did a great job ushering in Baron Davis and playing in the same back-court as him. He's a fine example of running two PG's in the same lineup, something I was hoping that we could have done with DJ and Felton. It's a shame it didn't turn out that way because I felt that DJ/Ray could have been as effective as Baron/Wesley.

I loved David Wesley. Great person. He missed one of the funniest lay ups I have ever seen.

Here are some highlights from the Nike Real Run championship, in which Shaun Livingston was playing :

Highlights for Livingston start at the 0:50 mark, it's kinda short, but he looks in great shape IMO.

:o You set the bar way too high their buddy! First off, BD (6'3 215 lbs) and David Wesley (6'1 203 lbs) were physically big Point guards nicknamed "the body guards" by Kenny "the Jet" Smith. DJ and Ray are both shorter players DJ isn't even 6 ft tall (DJ is 5'10 w/out shoes 5'11 w/shoes and Ray is 5'11 w/out shoes 6'0 w) so playing them together would cause matchup problems defensively for the Bobcats and neither of them had the skillset, scoring potential or playmaking abilities of Baron Davis when he was a young player out of UCLA. No way in heck they'd be as productive as BD and Wesley, offensively or defensively.
