Where can we trade Crawford?

Post#1 » by parson » Fri Sep 3, 2010 4:58 pm

It's the boring time of year, basketball-wise, so I thought I'd make this thread for kicks. Let's talk about possibilities for trading Crawford. Where can we trade him? What is his value? What would we like in return? Also, do we WANT to trade him?

Let me start: Crawford to SAC for Jason Thompson. They're said to be considering trading Thompson now that they have Cousins and they really need a SG. On our part, Thompson would look nice coming off the bench and is, himself, an expiring contract. We could probably re-sign Horford and still have enough to entice Thompson to stay.

OR, Crawford to POR for Pryzbilla and Bayless (pricey for them, I know, but they'd be more inclined to accept the deal, considering how Crawford would help them in the playoffs). On our side: Pryzbilla for the same reasons as Thompson; Bayless would give Teague a run for his money.

I would like either a C or a backup forward in return if we're dealing him straight up. I wouldn't trade him unless we get back decent value, and I think he'd probably have more value in a package deal. Here are some of my proposed trade ideas:

Jamal Crawford, Jason Collins
for
Timofey Mozgov, Bill Walker, Eddy Curry

Jamal Crawford
for
Nazr Mohammed, Gerald Henderson, Right to Swap 1sts

I like the Thompson trade, not a fan of the Portland trade.

The same Eddie Curry who couldn't talk to Billy Knight because he kept answering his cell phone? Who can't get on the court for a lousy Knicks team?

The CHAR trade has potential.

The same Eddy Curry who's an expiring contract and who gets us Bill Walker, a young athletic forward who blossomed after he went to NY, and Timofey Mozgov who is apparently pretty good and could be a legitimate backup C, but cheaper than Pryzbilla.

So we can trade Jamal's contract for an expiring contract, a young-athletic forward and a 'legitimate backup Center'.

Don't we already have all of those things? How does that improve us?

What backup forward do we have?

Having Mozgov would also allow us to run a big lineup more often without having to fear Horford or Zaza playing too many minutes.

If the Hawks aren't getting an impact player in return, there's no point in trading Jamal. Might as well just let him become a FA at year's end.

i think this makes sense. crawford's value to the team as it is now is greater than what they would get in return. why not just get as much as you can out of his this year and then let him go? he'll be motivated to do well because he is going into free agency so it's not as though he'll dog it all season long

I think we should trade him. I don't think we could get excellent value, but if we could get good value, then we'd be stupid to not trade him. The fact that the ASG pretty much lied to us about their willingness to pay the luxury tax means that taking the $10 mil of Jamal's contract off the books is worth more to us than even a good bench player. Jamal knows this and realizes that the likelihood of getting a FA payday is not very good if the team that has his Bird Rights would prefer to dump him than use him for other assets. This could get very ugly very quickly if we allow it to, so we should part ways if we can get anything approaching a decent return. I'd think that a useless expiring + a good prospect would be a decent return for Crawford.

From the deals that are listed here, I know POR is out. They got Matthews to take the minutes that Crawford would have otherwise played. I think CHAR is out - you never know with Larry Brown, but I don't see it. The SAC trade is interesting, but I doubt that SAC would do it. I'd think their aim would be to get players who'd fit around Tyreke and Cousins for the long term - Crawford is 30.

NYK as a landing point would be interesting. I don't mind taking a flyer on Curry (who has to show something this season or he might never play in the NBA again), and I do like Walker as a prospect (he's changed his game since his injury, but the athleticism is returning). I'd want more than just those 2 though and I'm not sure if Mozgov would actually beat out Zaza for any minutes - even though he isn't paid much less.

I've seen a trade on the trade board involving IND which would be an interesting match. They've got some large expiring in Dunleavy and TJ Ford and could prolly part with Rush. I like Rush and think he could be an excellent fit as a stretch the floor wing who could take the other team's primary wing on D (hopefully, this would allow Marvin to take a more primary role on O). I'd see Ford and Dunleavy as straight expirings who wouldn't get more than the MLE next off-season so we'd also have our tax relief so any actual burn we got from either of those 2 would just be bonus.

Some other interesting teams could be HOU and BOS. HOU has some interesting parts in Battier (expiring and a good mentor for Marvin) and an overload of PF prospects (although we're overloaded there already). Somewhere between a Battier + Jordan Hill for Crawford (too favorable for us) and Jared Jeffries + Chase Budinger (too favorable for them) you'd think there would be a match. BOS has Rasheed's contract which should disappear when he retires, some interesting young bigs (Perkins, Big Baby) who prolly win some minutes from Zaza, and have some other parts which could help us out (Marquis Daniels could beat out Mo Evans for minutes and having Avery Bradley to compete with Teague wouldn't be a bad thing). Not sure how they value them, but I could prolly take any 2 of the 4 with Rasheed and feel I've come out OK.

If we take back any contracts passed this season it could affect our ability to resign Horford. At least that's the financial impression I've got from the ASG's moves.

Richardson is almost the same problem than Crawford, he's exipiring and will ask for too much for ASG to extend him without paying Tax next year after extending Horford.

So basically, it's the same thing.
Now, we upgrade from Bibby to Nelson, and get Gortat who always made good stats in few minutes, but never show the efficiency of these stats (he often got very bad +/-, meaning ORL was loosing when he was on court).
Is it worth loosing Josh Smith ? A big "No"
