Should the Jays be trying to compete?

Yes, go for it 100% at the expense of some prospects.

No, stay in the 4th seed for now, and compete in a year or 2.

Rogers profit =/= their BASEBALL operations profit.

Yes, the line they feed the fans is that they spend out of the profits from the Jays, while their other billions sit idly by. It doesn't have to be this way: imagine Mark Cuban saying he wasn't going to spend his own cash on the Mavs, but only from any profit the Mavs made. Or again, would Jim Balsillie really have refused to spend money on Hamilton players if the team wasn't making much money. Likewise, Rogers can spend out of their own pockets.

Not only can they, but it makes good business sense for them to do so: since they own so many subsidiaries of the Jays (the stadium, the TV station that shows them, the radio station that plays them), if the Jays do well, then the TV station has better ratings, the stadium gets higher rent, the radio show gets higher advertisement dollar, and to top it off, they are national heroes, so we all buy their cell phones!

If we choose to believe that Rogers can only spend out of their left pocket because they say they can only spend out of their left pocket, then we are fools. Rogers has loads of money in their right pocket, and they can spend it if they want. They refuse to do it, so 15, 000 fans show up.

Rogers will spend, when they see it just to do so. We quickly forget the Troy Glaus, A.J. Burnett and B.J. money which is still being paid this season.

Rogers will spend, I doubt as much as the Yankees. But this team will be in the range of the Red Sox which is fine as you would imagine improvements will be made on the fly as the team wins ballgames. It would be beautiful though to see Rogers break the bank and outbid anyone for the services of Pujols. That would be incredible and totally doable as far as Rogers' financing department is concerned.

But I agree, if we sign Manny we might as well add another piece or two. Boston is fading fast, Tampa may begin to see their demise starting next season in a stadium that barely sells 15k tickets a night while sporting the best record in baseball for much of the season. (don't know how they are going to sign their young kids as many approach 6 yrs. of service) The time to contend is approaching, Rogers understands the beast of the A.L. East I would trust and knows that to win it will take growing as much talent as you can and plugging in some all stars in areas where you need help.
