Cap Hold for 2nd round picks

Post#1 » by roc » Wed Sep 8, 2010 11:11 pm

I noticed Sham has guys like Jarebko listed as cap holds = to QO but that seems wrong.

I was under the impression that a 3rd year 2nd round picks cap hold was = to MLE according to rule 31 on Larry Coon's site.

Go to said rule 31 and read the first line of the table, as well as this bit:

A restricted free agent counts against his team's salary cap by the greatest of:

His free agent amount (as defined in the table above)
The amount of his qualifying offer (see question number 37)
The first year salary from any offer sheet the player signs with another team (see question number 37)

Draft spot is irrelevant.

Good question.

As the FAQ points, out in answering question #31, his cap hold is the largest of these three figures:

1) $884, 293 [His free agent amount as a player making a minimum salary in 2010-11]

2) $1,059,293 [His qualifying offer amount, assuming that one will be made]

3) $0 [The 2011-12 portion of any offer sheet made by another team]

I get that another team's offer to Jarebko would be limited by the average player salary amount (ie, the amount of the MLE) if the new CBA keeps the current rules for offer sheets. In Jarebko's case, though, his cap hit will be different from the maximum offer that another team could make to him.
