Nets Sign Joe Smith 1 Year/Vet's Minimum

Post#1 » by Rockice_8 » Fri Sep 10, 2010 12:35 pm

Well we now have 15 guys under contract. The final piece to be puzzle is Joe Smith. Not sure what he has left and I don't know the details of the deal but the link is on NetsDaily.

There's really no PT for him but he should be a solid character guy to add to this young squad. You can never have enough of them.

Don't see anything negative about this signing . Solid character , was a decent player even though he never lived up to the Nr. 1 Pick Tag . Still made himself a nice career.

Probably not going to get much PT but still a nice piece to fill out the roster. Not like there was anything we really needed anymore anyway . Good character was probably the most important thing here. May also was pretty decent character wise so.

Not much to say about it but I like it. If Hump or Murphy get injured he could see some spot minutes.

Down with NJN since Kenny and Derrick

High character huh?? I never knew great character wins games. Is everyone forgetting the Nets won 12 games last year??? You would think there would be more of an emphasis on oh I dont know SCORING AND DEFENDING??? Melo or CP3 should have been on this team a while ago. I love the story on here a few days ago that the Nets plan to wait for Carmelo to be a free agent to sign him, because going through a 12 win season was certainly worth it to wait for this years free agent market...... I have nothing against Joe Smith, but he has no place on this team. Might as well have signed Jamaal Magloire again. If management had the courage to go out and sign someone GOOD or trade for an elite player I wouldnt have minded this.

We had one roster spot left...who exactly did you have in mind to fill it up for the minimum? I happen to think that this is a great signing because I was just telling someone that this team really needs a veteran leader in the locker room. It's a stronger presence than you think and it DOES make a difference. When Favors or Lopez have bad games or a bad stretch of games, it's always good to hear a fellow veteran big keeping your confidence up and offering you tips from experience unconditionally. Hearing it from a player is a lot different than when a coach says it to you.

Joe Smith is a veteran leader? We would have been better off signing Shaq when he was free. Not sure he would want to sign here, but being its his hometown it might have helped. You want a mentor? What better mentor for Lopez and Favors that the most dominant big man of the past 30 years?

Oh, and saying a player is a good character guy is like saying a girl has a nice personality. Its just a sugar coated way of saying youre ugly/you suck at bball.

Dude, really? Give it a rest, this is a completely inconsequential signing basketball wise and anyone who was our 15th man would have been. There aren't enough minutes to go around as is anyway.

Then why make it? Why not try to actually improve the team? I go out to each game supporting my team and pay good hard earned money to watch this team play and I expect better from management than Johan Petro and Joe Smith as our offseason signings. Yeah I know they signed other guys too, but theyre not much better.

You're right, the FO sould have held a gun to Lebron's kid and told him if he doesn't sign with us, your son gets it.

Or paid Amar'e $100 million to play 2 or 3 good seasons.

Better yet, signed Boozer and got locked into mediocrity.

And then, they should have traded for Chris Paul and Melo even though they're both still on their respective teams and aren't technically on the block.

I really don't understand what you wanted management to do?

Only on Realgm (and espn boards) will you see people complain about signing a 14/15th man.

Exactly just like some got their panties in a bunch about the May deal.. a non-guaranteed contract for a 15th man. I dunno, if this deal is guaranteed or not, but I do like the fact this could make Humphries expendable in trade and his $3.2m expirer.

Well, we do have Zoubek and Uzoh, so technically Joe is 13th.

I wouldnt be talking if I were you buddy, youve made some of the most ridiculous posts on this board.

Its almost like most of the ppl here agree with everything the nets do because they are fans, much like little kids agree with everything their parents tell them. This team has not made good decisions this off season other than avery johnson. IN FACT I recall some of you hating on avery johnson that you didnt want him to be coach, then all of a sudden hes the coach and youre all like oh yeah what a great signing. Are you guys affraid to disagree with the nets?

Not true. The only signing I actually liked were the Morrow signing... and the farmar signing to a much lesser extent. I barked at the Petro signing and was absolutely furious with the Outlaw signing. But, this one?? it's the veterans minimum c'mon... how exactly is this signing gonna ruin the team?

May going down opened up a spot for Mighty Joe.
Ironically they didn't sign him before bc he wanted a guaranteed deal. Now they pay him and May! :D

Revolutionist, this signing was made with Favors in mind.

The 6-10, 225-pound Smith adds depth off the bench for the Nets at a bargain price. His minutes will likely be minimal -- he averaged less than 10 per game last season with the Atlanta Hawks -- as will his statistical production, but his tutelage for the Nets' young frontcourt players could be invaluable.

The Nets are hoping to rear Derrick Favors, the No. 3 overall pick in last June's draft, into a starter at power forward sooner rather than later.
