B.J. Ryan has Tommy John surgery

B.J. Ryan underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday, ending his season.
Dr. James Andrews said last month than Ryan didn't need surgery, but a reexamination apparently found something different. The Jays hope Ryan will be ready for the start of 2008, but setbacks are a possibility. Jason Frasor, Jeremy Accardo and Casey Janssen are all candidates for saves in the Toronto pen.

WTF

You do realize almost all players come back from TJ, dont you? Hell most pitchers pick up velocity after TJ.

Not over but that's a major speed bump in the road... some people can't overcome the injury mentally. Hope he recovers, he's one of my favorite non-Athletics.

Wow, how'd that happen? He was a dominant closer last season, now his season's over. Crazy

To be honest, I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Is it me or does it seem like every pitcher who signs a fat/long contract with another team ends up missing at least a year with some sort of elbow/arm injury?

And yeah, Tommy John surgery is a hell of a recovery process but in the end, you're generally stronger than you were before it. Has to do with the tendon they transplant from whichever body part (forearm, hammy, etc).

Well it's surely going to be tough to come back from. He may never be as good as he was before. Or maybe he will be, we'll see.

A lot of scouts sort of expected this to happen at some point, it was just a counting game until it happend. I think it has to do with his violent delivery.

Pitchers are generally "stronger" when they come back from TJ surgery for two reasons. One, you get a fresh piece of muscle replacing the worn, torn piece that you've used for 20 something years throwing a baseball. Second, the rehab process is extremely intense because you are forced to re-learn the muscle memory that was second nature. Because of that, the rehab can make the arm even stronger. Makes me wonder why more teams don't use the rehab process on pitchers with clean arms. mahalo
