If a Celts fan can interject with a humble opinion - I liked it better when he wore 8. For whatever reason, it just looked better on him (pause), plus KB8 sounded better than KB24. The fact that he changed his number just to spite Adidas seemed so petty, and the 24 still looks weird. It's about as fun as seeing Iverson wear #1 for the Pistons and Jordan wearing #45. You guys are right though - he'll probably get both numbers retired.

thank you for pausing

in reality, i liked 8 on Kobe better, but i understand why he changed his number, i fully expect them to retire 24.

Kobe is good enough of a player to warrant 2 retired jerseys for him. I say retire both

Re: Kobe:2 retired jerseys or 1?
I think both should be retired however if there can only be one I think it will be 24. To be honest if a rookie comes along I don't think they will pick number 8. People have too much respect for Kobe. Only way I see 8 being used is if another player is traded to the Lakers or signs as a free agent and has worn number 8 for his entire career I don't think the Lakers will tell him he can't wear it. However in order to make sure none of that happens both should be retired.
Maybe both jerseys are retired but only 24 gets hung.

Re: Kobe:2 retired jerseys or 1?
#8 was Kobe with athleticism doing insane in game dunks and went to the fundamentals whenever he wanted to, if we could somehow turn back time Lebron and the rest of these new cats couldn't and still don't hold a candle to Kobe when he had his athleticism so I think both need to be retired he won 3 with 8 and 2 with 24 but like I said before the Lakers aren't into gimmicks, ps Shaq isn't getting his jersey hung up in Staples

2 more rings = DEFINITELY two jersies
1 more ring = good chance at two jersies
0 more rings = ONLY number 24.

Re: Kobe:2 retired jerseys or 1?
Guys, guys, guys, guys....
The Lakers will not retire two numbers for Kobe.
As incredible as Kobe is, IMO the best Laker ever, retiring two numbers simply would not look good next to all the legendary Lakers who only have one. It's not that he doesn't necessarily deserve it, but it would appear as if he 'one-upped' West, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, etc. Screw that! That would just look tacky and disrespectful to our amazing past.
I'm fairly certain it'll be #24-- I'm confident that these last two championships are much more personal to him than the three he won with Shaq (whose #34 will be retired also).
After Kobe retires and decides (or the Laker organization decides), the number that isn't retired will most likely go back to being able to be worn by anyone.
For what it's worth, I remember a few years back, Kobe on his website answered this exact question which was from a fan. While in the locker room with his wife and daughters Kobe said it was up to the Lakers. Kobe then asked Vanessa which number she liked more, #8 or #24. She answered with #8. This was a few years back... so I guess we'll see...
Don't forget about #16 up there too.

Agree that it'll probably be 24. I REALLY liked 8 better, though. Somehow it was more fitting, and I always used to think, "crazy eight!"

Wrong Order
24, 16, then 34.
Shaq will get his jersey hang on Staples Center wall one day but please believe Dr. Buss isn't gonna honor Shaq before Kobe

No Doubt #8 was legendary.
First Three Peat.
62 points in three quarters.
81 Points.
That Stretch were he scored 40+ plus points like ten games straight.
50 points 4 games in a row.
The List Goes on .
But I think when it is all said and done Kobe will accomplish more rocking the #24 jersey.
Plus it will be his choice what number gets to go up on Staples Center wall.
I think smart money is he'll be much more prouder of what he accomplished in the twenty four jersey.
I think the Kobe Statue they will build outside of Staples will be him rocking the #8 jersey.

Seriously only 1
The ONLY way #8 gets retired if by some miracle Kobe pulls 3 more championships out of his ass which is less than 1 and 10000
I'm going to as many games as possible this year
PJ last season
Things might change quicker than we ever thought
Love this team

#24
He made a legacy for himself as #24. While he was #8, he did win 3 titles, but
he was also not the real "man" of the team. Shaq was. When he switched to #24,
he became the undisputed man of the team, the alpha dog.
