WT: Kevin Martin Finally 100 Percent Healthy

Post#1 » by Optimism Prime » Wed Sep 15, 2010 2:57 pm

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... t_healthy/

Coach Thorpe: "He landed incredibly awkwardly on his ankle. When he was rehabbing the ankle for a sprain, which should have been a 10-day issue, he found out he had severely bruised the ankle. He was not rehabbing that correctly, impacting his athleticism. He was in pain when he returned and kept re-aggravating it and re-aggravating it. He was up all night in pain some nights... He looked like a 21-year-old the way he was running and jumping and sprinting. The results were phenomenal. He never shot like this. He never had a better summer shooting the ball than this summer. I'm more hopeful than I ever have been before about him shooting the 3... He wants to be an all star, wants to be one of best shooting guards in the league."

Thorpe knows his shiz. If he says Pumpfake is healthy, I believe him.

Normally I'd believe Thorpe (and Martin), but it has this nasty PR move/empty talk feel to it, that you hear every off-season (McGrady-Grover instantly comes to mind).

McGrady's recent workouts are any indication, it would be easy to assume that his game will have all of its dimensions back this season.

"I think he's gonna be a player like he used to be in his younger days, because his body is balanced now," Reavy says confidently. "He's using all his muscles properly and everything's absorbing a force and creating a force versus just the knee."
"One-hundred percent ready to go and he's been ready," Grover told The Post from his Chicago athletic compound where he's been working with McGrady since Christmas. "No limitations, no anything."

"Any team who wants to come down to Chicago, to come look at it, I don't pull any punches," said Grover, who made a career of training Michael Jordan and took on Kobe Bryant last season. "Put him through anything they want him to put him through. Whether it's a trade or buyout, he's ready to go."
“It’s really no comparison to how I feel now and I how felt trying to play all of last season,” McGrady said. “My knee is feeling extremely strong. The most important thing is I’m confident in it. You guys just stay tuned. I’m out here grinding in Chicago, trying to get back right, but yes I will be playing for the Rockets in the ‘09-10 season.

“I will be in uniform for the Rockets this upcoming season, I guarantee you that, and I will be a lot better than I was last year. I will be back to the player that I once was.

“I will guarantee you that.”

McGrady doesn’t know when he will rejoin the Rockets, but he believes it’ll be sooner rather than later.

“I’m not really worrying about a target date right now,” McGrady said. The most important thing is just to get myself healthy, which I’m confident that I will be for this upcoming season.

“I feel that if I go out there right now I could get somebody 30 (points).”

I do trust Thorpe and Martin a lot more than Grover and McGrady, but until I see it I won't put too much into all that. Been there done that. Let your actions do the speaking.

It does not matter if he is healthy now. Tell me this when the season half threw and I am sure Martin could be an Allstar again.

Again? Kevin Martin's never been an All Star.

I was reading this (Kings fan) and it came of no surprise that Kevin wasn't the one doing the talking. In his time in Sacramento he wanted to be "the guy" but he's not mentally tough. He's got talent but he's a marshmallow. So when I'm reading this I'm looking at it like why isn't Kevin doing the talking? It just reeks that he hasn't changed.

I'm just warning you guys now that Kevin always starts off seasons on fire. During the first few games of each season he looks like a superstar and one of the leagues best players. As the season goes on, he starts looking worse because he usually gets banged up. The good thing is that Adelman uses him as more of a shooter so he probably won't get banged up as much this year. I'm hoping that Adelman takes it easy on Martin during the regular season the way he wants to take it easy on Yao. If Yao and Martin are both at 100% for the playoffs, this team is going to look scary.

You're definitely going to see it. The question is how long are you going to see it for. He might play amazing for the first 10 games of the year and then get injured. Staying healthy is the most important thing for him right now because he looks like a different player when he's not healthy.

He did say

"I'll be very different," Martin said. "I'll be back to my pre-wrist-injury form. I'm feeling better, more like I was before the injury. That was the main goal, to get back there. My goal when I got traded was to fit in with a great group of guys, not try to be that person that came in here thinking he was going to take every shot. That fitting-in phase is definitely over. Now I'm ready to get back to being myself.

Hopefully we will see the real Kevin Martin next year and not Pumpfake.

edit: does that mean he's going to chuck the ball relentlessly? I hope he doesn't try to take over. We have too much offensive talent on this team for that.

When Martin first got in the league, the Kings had Martin lower the ball to his hip to start his shooting stroke and as a rule Thorpe said he defers to the NBA teams that employ his player. But as Martin has gotten stronger since then, the wind up has become unnecessary.

WTF

Which idiot told him to start shooting from his hip?

If this news holds, you guys are going to see circa 07-08 Martin play style from him. This version of Martin had a very good variance of offensive moves. He had a balanced ratio of off the ball action and one on one. Picks his spots very well and generated a crap load of cuts to the rim.

This is probably the last year that Martin lost his 'super efficiency'. The last couple of years Martin is still pretty good efficiency but not at a peak form due to having more offensive responsibility on his shoulders.

Good to hear Martin is 100% healthy.

Adding Courtney Lee should limit Martin's minutes to about 30 a night. I really just expect Adelman to use him to get into the bonus and that's when Yao is at his best. Then, we can rely on Lee's defense and a lighter version of Kevin Martin's offense.

If Martin improved on D this summer then maybe he can stay in during the last five minutes of a tight game.

This is also the second Kevin Martin injury that i've read about being mis-diagnosed, the first being a shoulder injury that caused him to miss significant more time than he should have. The Kings must have some really bad medical people.

In related news, the wiretap also says we're not looking to trade Martin.

http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wireta ... al_martin/

Was that even being discussed? :dontknow:

Sounds pretty convincing. Hope it's true, and that we can see him contribute but not have to be "the guy" and end up being a chucker.

It's Kevin Martin, he's very young and very intelligent, well that's an IMO. I don't see him pulling a McGrady.

That is the real Kevin Martin. It's get to the line by any means necessary for three quarters and in the fourth not get ticky tack fouls.

Kevin Martin is a good NBA player. He can score, and score in bunches. It can be different if he plays off of Yao Ming. If he does that and they have a good inside out game then it really could elevate Kevin to another level. I just don't believe the guy has the moxie in him to do it. He's not lacking ability for sure. I just see him as soft. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm glad he's out of Sacramento.
