The season starts in 5 weeks so he won't miss too many games. He'll probably be pretty badly out of shape though.

On the bright side it gives Alabi or Dorsey some run to show something. You know Davis will get his minutes regardless this season. Missing a training camp under the instruction of Jay Triano isn't the end of the world

Raptors’ pick-up basketball games are not inherently evil

Eric Koreen September 20, 2010 – 1:15 pm

We are still more than five weeks away from the start of the National Basketball Association season, one that figures to be bleak for the Toronto Raptors. Already, they are facing some grim news.

Last Wednesday, a few of the young Raptors, as has been their habit, went to a local gym to play pick-up basketball with some regulars. Among the attendees in Mississauga: swingmen Sonny Weems and DeMar DeRozan, as well as rookie power forward Ed Davis.

Davis, however, hurt himself, suffering an injury to his right knee meniscus. On Monday, the Raptors revealed that the rookie had arthroscopic surgery on the knee to repair a tear, and that he will resume working out at some point within the next six weeks. Training camp begins in eight days, and the regular season kicks off in a little more than five weeks. It would take a rapid recovery for him to be ready to play on Oct. 27 when the Raptors start the regular season against the Knicks.

In short: do not expect any more guerrilla pick-up games organized via Twitter from the young Raptors. If you are Bryan Colangelo, you probably do not want a player such as DeMar DeRozan, in whom you have millions of dollars invested, playing a game in which there is no medical staff on hand, especially this close to the season.

However, any criticism of the team or its players is reactionary and unjust. This season is not a particularly promising one, but the Raptors at least have a group of players who seem enthused about the situation they are in. Johnson, Weems, DeRozan and Davis have all engaged Toronto fans to different extents on Twitter. They have all expressed love for the city, something that is integral given what happened with Chris Bosh this summer.

Further to the point: Davis hurt himself playing basketball. This could have happened at any point during the off-season when he was off working by himself. Sure, a game against guys off of the street probably was not going to exponentially improve Davis’s skills, but getting a run in is rarely a bad thing.

Basketball players are going to play basketball. That they are enthusiastic about organizing and playing basketball instead of trips to, say, Yorkville haunt Lobby is a very good thing.

Now, about those paintball games they are organizing…

If there is a bright side it's that the recovery suggest the tear was minor and the doctors trimmed the torn part rather than attempt to sew it up, which is done in more serious cases and requires a much longer recovery time, like 4-6 months.

we have millions invested in DeRozan? Since when? Unless Koreen means his contract...then we got millions invested in several players on our squad.

Hey Hedo missed training camp to rest up last year and it worked out well, so no reason to worry.

Anyone want to argue that missing training camp as a rookie won't be detrimental to his development?

Man, that sucks. It's not like we're going to be a great team with him - in fact this will help our chances early on for more lottery balls since he won't be back in game shape for a while. But this really takes a good chunk of excitement out of the beginning of the year for me. Was looking forward to a 100% Ed Davis.

Not fun...

Not a great way to start out in the NBA, he'll be behind with the system unless he can learn from the sidelines.

This is key, IMHO. Here's a group of young players with good work ethic who play hard, developing camaraderie and chemistry and they're actually in town interacting with fans playing pickup in local gyms. This is a good change from recent past when players with questionable work ethic who don't seem to care much for Toronto other than during the season.

Bosh was a leader by setting an example but not much else; but here's a group of young gym rats who actually walks the talk when it comes to trying to improve themselves, developing relationships with themselves and with the fans. There's potential there may be a real leader(s) among them, something that's been lacking in Toronto for a long time.

I actually consider this very good news...

It could of been a lot worse and really other than getting into basketball shape later than everyone else its not going to effect his learning curve that much. This is the year of heavy duty military machinery so its not like we need him at 100% for our push to the playoffs.

Much better for him to get healthy and then work his way into the rotation.

Its an unfortunate accident for Davis but I'm glad he'll be back week 1-2. We'll get him in the game when he's ready.

Don't rush things.

Sucks a lot, but I agree with Koreen.

Davis is really gonna be out of shape though for this whole year though I'm thinking. He couldn't lift weights for the majority of last year because of his wrist injury. And now he's going to not be able to lift because of this. The middle of the year isn't any time to put weight on.

He’s going to be very rusty when the season starts. He’s actually got a very big hurdle to get through: gruelling training camp to build stamina, learning basic plays, getting comfortable with the team, etc. We might not see the true Ed Davis until Christmas.

ill take the slightly increased chance of injury in this run rather than a run at the raptors facility for just having guys who like toronto, are making it their home, and love playing basketball. easy trade off for me. unfortunate injury, but it couldve been worse, and it couldve happened anywhere
