Kirk Penney invited to training camp

Post#1 » by Ced » Wed Sep 22, 2010 11:07 pm

Good news for Spurs fans! You're getting a big time pure shooter, hopefully he can make the teamby beating out Neal, Temple and Gee.

It doesn't make sense to me, since we just signed Gary Neal. Neal's 1st year is guaranteed, so i don't see how this guy could make the team.

Temple is combo-guard, but Pop wants him as a backup PG. He is a defensive specialist, not a shooter. Gee is a SF. Good defender, good slasher but not a shooter. So, basically the only guy Penney is competing is Neal.
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

It's really hard Penney make it since he's a guard 6´5 and basically a shooter. Spurs added Gary Neil for that reason, so adding another one, with the luck of a back up SF is difficult.

Spurs invited James Gist (2nd round pick 2008) and Marcus Cousin to training camp also.

If Pop is really looking for that back up SF, Gee and Gist are the ones with better chances..

After Gee's summer league performance, I think he's the leading candidate to win the roster spot.

I saw the open practice game.
Penney can really shoot. Too bad if we don't sign him. He's experienced also..
Gee is the most athletic young guy, but his shot selection is bad and not much of a shooter. I don't see him being the back up SF.
Bobby Simmons was OK. His body is fine and did a good effort in D. Good shooter also. I think he is going to make it.
James Gist is a fast PF with good D, specially on Pick n roll and he's athletic, though his offense is not good. But he shows a lot of energy.
I like Anderson cause he has the head in the right place. He can score also.
Jerrels is a good shooter and he can finish ok, but i'm not sure of his playmaking skills.
Neil was OK too. Active on D and he's a good shooter.
Cousin has a good jumper, but he didn't show too much so far..

Good Toros roster:
Jerrels
Temple
Gee
Gist
Cousin

For the guys who haven't watch the open practice.

Btw, it's true that none of the expected backup SF didn't seem to shine. It looks like Bobby Simmons vs Alonzo Gee. The guy that surprised me on that practice was James Gist. He was active, rebounds, got a few dunks, and even showed a nice jumper. Too little sample thou but he was impressive in this practice. Problem is, he's being played exclusively at PF. I don't recall him playing a single minute at SF in that practice. He's always the 2nd big guy on his team. Lots of times with Bonner at his side and he's guarding Blair most of the time.

Penny just got cut today. I liked the guy but there's just no room for him on this team.

It's a pity, he usually plays in the NBL (Aussie League) and he is an MVP candidate and one of the best scorers in the league. His numbers were actually better in the World Championships than in the NBL is he is a big time player and probably would have made a nice addition, but alas no room.

Doesn't look like he'll be anything more than a shooter in the NBA. How old is he anyways? He looks kinda old. I'm guessing mid to late 20s. Like 28 or something. Could be one of the reason he's not kept.

He definatly would be only a shooter in the nba. Though the guy has got some game about him. I could see him being a poor mans Mike Miller given his play in the World Championships.
But i think if we didn't pick him up he probably isn't going to get another chance in the NBA.
Hopefully he comes and tears it up back here again.
