Suns Extend Gentry through 2012/2013 Season

Post#1 » by Sun Scorched » Thu Sep 23, 2010 9:41 pm

The Phoenix Suns signed head coach Alvin Gentry to a contract extension that will keep him with the club through the 2012-13 season.

“It was important to extend Alvin’s contract before this season,” said Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby. “He proved his mettle as the perfect coach for the Suns last season. We are excited to have him lead our team going forward.”

I'm a big fan of Gentry (he really did deserve this) and the general pro-active nature of our FO.

Has anyone else noticed that we are going out and actually doing things? For some reason that feels odd.

Stability FTW!

It's good to have a nice little core set up. Now lets lock up J-Rich and Dudley. F rebuilding, it's no fun.

Great news, always liked him as an asst coach but love the way he coaches even more. Also his decision to stay in phx when DA left said a lot about his character.

They were going to go with a new contract if Porter found a coaching job to offset what Suns still owe him.

In all honesty, I wasn't terribly crazy about some of his coaching decisions in the WCF (and I made that clear in the threads at the time)...so I really do hope he learns from his mistakes during that time and can grow as a leader and coach of this team.

Great move by the Suns. If anyone is going to lead the Suns to their next championship, its going to be Gentry.

Me neither. I wasn't too impressed with him in Game 6 of the WCF when Kobe hit that shot over Grant Hill, and to see him having a laugh with Kobe after the game... Hmm.

I know its good sportsmanship, but it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. I wasn't too sure how I felt about that.

Not sure what you mean by going out and doing things, seems the Suns have been more reactive than proactive this offseason.

Kind of odd, but I can see how we have both been proactive and reactive this offseason, just different spurts of each.

Really good call - the players love him, players we may want to add will be eager to play for him and he's great with vets and young players alike. That's going to be huge for Lawal, Janning, Siler and Clark.

I'd say more reactive than anything. Having top execs leave without having replacements, then striking out on the top candidates. Plus the initial position of not picking up the option on Gentry's contract only to later give him an extension.

Amare's camp being the ones to initiate the S&T(could say using the TE for Childress was proactive but still it's not a move they would have been able to make without outside influences).

Even the trade for Hedo came after Barbosa requested a trade.

The team has made moves but not in a way that shows the slightest sense of adhering to a plan they had entering the off-season.

When I think about being proactive and getting things done I think back to targeting Nash and Bell as top FA choices and having them commit the first day of free agency.
