Extending J-RICH????

Post#1 » by Kerrsed » Thu Sep 23, 2010 8:01 pm

J-Rich's Big Year: Phoenix Suns' guard Jason Richardson is coming to the end of his contract, a deal that will pay him roughly $14.4 million this season.

The Suns have a contract extension on the table and Richardson is still pondering the offer as the Suns get ready to open training camp.

For Richardson, this could be a defining year as the Suns' roster is going to need to replace the 23.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game the club lost when Amar'e Stoudemire opted for New York in free agency.

"I feel like I'm going to college," Richardson said to Paul Coro of The Arizona Republic.. "I've got to pick a decision. It's going to be fun. I'm not even worried about it. What happens, happens. If I get an extension here, I would love to be here and maybe finish my career here. It's a business. You never know. There's no pressure on me to go out and perform just because it's my contract year. I'm always a firm believer that if you work hard, things will come out your way."

Richardson's career scoring average is 18.3 point per game which is a bit higher than his 16.05 average as a member of the Suns. In 2005-2006 Richardson averaged 23.2 points per game, meaning there is room to improve, and that's a good thing coming into a contract year.

"I'm not necessarily motivated (by a contract year) but I know what's at stake," he said. "I know I put in a lot of work this summer. I really prepared myself. I know this is probably my last big chance to get a contract. I'm getting up there. I'm going to be 30 in January."

Given how the Suns handled Amar'e Stoudemire's contract extension, you can bet the deal on the table for Richardson has a number of incentives and guarantee triggers which is likely why Richardson is holding off on signing the deal.

If J-Rich can be the second or third scoring option for the Suns this season his numbers may go way up, not only in scoring averages, but in what the Suns would be willing to guarantee in contract dollars.

It's going to be a big year for Jason Richardson and for a Suns' team that needs scoring; having a volume scorer in a contract year isn't a bad problem to have.

Im' a firm believer you need a 2 guard who can create his own shot and play great defense.

Problem is you can count those guys on one hand.

Depends how much J rich wants.

If it's more than 11 mil no thanks.

From everything that i have read, Nash is now our first option. With the addition of Turk, Nash will be getting his shots from Hedo assisted passes.

I like J-Rich and I hope they gave him a reasonable offer.

Imagine if they announced they signed J-Rich to a 3 year 21-24 million dollar contract. That would be awesome! I'm assuming he's going to cost a good deal more then that and want more years . . .

Why the Suns has offered him a pre-camp extension: They think he's going to have a big year as the Suns' leading scorer.

Why Richardson hasn't accepted the pre-cap proposal: He thinks he's going to have a big year as the Suns' leading scorer.

Really is that simple.

I doubt we'll end up paying what he wants.

Most likely, considering the offer is on the table and he has yet to take it.

I'm hoping something along the lines of $7-8m for 3 years.

This. Although I'm not too sure if J-Rich will accept it. He will probably rate long term security over financial security at this stage. I think the Suns might have to offer a bit more.

With how little we are hearing out of the Suns FO, I really doubt that they are going to announce our number one option. I think Gentry was saying that we can now use Nash as an off the ball shooter more often after getting Hedo. Makes sense that we would use the best shooter in the NBA for the past four years, as a shooter

Truth is, any one of a handful of players could be our first option on offense.

I want to wait and see how well JChill does before we extend JRich. If Chill does well, we can always move JR and then move either Dudley or Hill into the SG position without missing a beat. I wouldn't mind seeing Dragic at the two sometimes with Nash at the one.

The best thing about this squad is it's versatility (well on offense at least.)

He's probably an 18ppg scorer at best next to Nash at this stage of his career. He's not going to get better and his inability to create his own shot makes it an easy decision not to overpay him. We could backload his contract so he's still making $10m next season and gradually going down so it averages out to roughly $8m

Let him play out his contract year then get overpaid by someone else. We could start Dragic at SG next season then draft a SG next June.

If we're gonna let him go, I'd rather trade his expiring to get a power forward. Then draft Malcolm Lee who I like so far. If we don't get a PF through trade or have Lawal turn into better than just a good player, I'd rather go for a big with the draft and just start Childress or Dudley at sg. They're bigger than the average 2 guard but that's about all they defend (Dudley got Wade, Kobe, Manu, etc. and did about as well as anyone can hope to while shooting an unbelievable percentage from 3)

Hill actually logged many minutes against those guys as well. Let us wait this one out. No rush with the new CBA coming. I don't think many guys are going to overpay next summer. We should extend Dudley and Goran first, not JRich. I still want to see how well Chill does.

So my answer is: Not yet.

If he can shoot the 3 til 35 and stay healthy, give him his same contract back.

8, 9.9, 11, 12.x, 14.4 or something like that.

Add a bonehead clause.

I still consider him for a PF for now though.

Once his athleticism declines with age, we'll be paying JRich $14m to exclusively shoot 3's at 35. No thanks.

I agree - move JRich as a soild scorer with an expiring contract and slot Duds at SG. Also solves a bit of the SF jam-up

Man, we have so many guys who can play multiple positions. One more big would do it

who would that be, if you could get them? Someone who could reasonably be had for JR

David West? I kind of like the idea of Spencer Hawes
