Could Twitter increase Bautista's chances as MVP?

Post#1 » by YogiStewart » Sat Sep 25, 2010 3:22 pm

Just wondering what the effect of social media is on something like MVP voting and a player getting press.
when Bautista hit 50, it apparently barely made a dent in Twitter.
if the Bautista story is not a story and there isn't a buzz, one could assume that players in cities such as NY (eg Cano) would have an edge.

with Twitter, if you had people tweeting and tagging tweets and tweeters re-tweeting tweets from members of the media who may tweet about Bautista, would that not (possibly) drive up Bautista talk and increase his profile? again, its theoretical, since it would take quite a snowball effect to get a large volume of Bautista-related tweets to hit twitter....

I think this is a great idea!

Also maybe creating a facebook page - Baustista for MVP - or something like that would help too?

I almost convinced myself that Bautista could win it the other day, considering the fact that he has like 20 more homers than Josh Hamilton. But by the same token, Hamilton has a better average by like 100 points...

Considering how close he is to Hamilton, Cabrera and Cano in OPS and the little matter of the 52 HOME RUNS, you'd think he would at least be in the discussion, but nope. All that matters to the media is that his batting average isn't near .300. No amount of tweeting will get the twats to notice.

I'm not trying to say Bautista doesn't deserve serious MVP consideration, infact I think he should get it... but if the management is intending to re-sign him wouldn't it be disadvantageous for his value to get any higher? His agent is gonna have a pretty damn good case (50+ homers, MVP, potential gold glove at RF if he gotten full-time or w.e) when they're gonna be asking for 15 mil + annually.

Facebook Fan Pages are MAJOR draw for companies and fans. The average facebook fan, for a business, is worth $320+ and main stream advertising is basically dead...

Many people live online these days, 24/7 --- just look at many members of this board and the Raptors board in particular. If, as a company, you meet your clients/fans where they reside (online) and provide a really positive experience, you stick out in their mind.

A facebook fan page for something like this would have to be some serious kick-ass multimedia or game or something, to attract people to it and keep them there. A simple fan page wouldn't do.

If you want to see GREAT fanpages - check these out:

50 was big, but 52 sounds HUGE now. Unfortunately the media will be satisfied just putting him in the conversation.

Who would you rather on your team this year? Jose Bautista or Josh Hamilton? With the game on the line in a big game? Hmmm, that 52 really sticks out to me.

Baseball writers are really anal and I get the impression that they would use something like this against Bautista out of spite, and just to emphasize their old school way of thinking.

It's not like he's batting .270 and the competition is batting .300. Josh Hamilton's BA is 94 points higher than that of Bautista. It's a massive difference.

the stats monkeys are gonna eat me up when i say this, but....

batting averages are cool stats, but apply that to the game setting.

what would you rather have? a player who smashes a home run once every 3 games? or a player who gets one extra hit every 3 games? because really, the batting average is telling over a season but its game-to-game impact is less than a home run.

not delving into Bautista and Hamilton's other stats, like OBP or sluggin %, but baseball writers are so enamoured with batting averages. they are not the most telling of statistics and should not be the primary stat used when voting for an MVP.

and Hamilton missed a month. shouldn't that affect the voting?
