Cousins: "I want to be the Rookie of the Year"

Post#1 » by KF10 » Sun Sep 26, 2010 10:23 am

In Jason Jones' article about Cousins' (a very good article. guys you should read it), Cousins wants the ROY award:

"When I'm on the court, I'm trying to show you – especially the people that doubted my basketball skills," Cousins said. "I want to be the Rookie of the Year. I didn't get a chance to be the Player of the Year in college. I need my own individual award. I want mine."

http://www.sacbee.com/2010/09/26/305717 ... -back.html

And at the same time he wants to prove everyone that doubted him as a player and also, as an individual.

You gotta love his competitiveness and his fire. The kid is going to do great things if everything goes right. I really like how the Kings solidified the most important positions in the NBA with Evans and Cousins. Going to be a hellva 1-2 punch in the future.

No one actually questioned his basketball skills in fact most scout said he could be the best player in the draft, most criticism i herd were about his attitude, work ethic, and conditioning... anyway hopefully things workout well for him and he wins the award. b2b roy would be very cool.

Must be true, if it's a rumor you read on Hoopshype.

I dont know if this is good or bad. Good in a sense that he is really competitive and confident but shows a bit of selfishness. Most rookies say "I just want to do what i can to help my team make the playoffs" or something like that. If he doesn't get the time that he wants/expects I can see that attitude everyone criticizes him on coming out.

It does feel a little selfish, but you have to like the fire. I especially look forward to games against everyone who didn't draft him. Boogie seems like the type to hold a grudge.

I agree - this is could go both ways - I am glad that he has that fire and wants to prove his doubters wrong. But honestly where is the mention of not winning the championship for kentucky? Shouldnt that have been more important than not being considered for an award. I hope he is more worried about winning an NBA champion for the kings then getting an mvp or rookie of the year award... But then again I guess if he were to get the rookie of the year award, it would mean he did his job and gave 110% for the team and got us wins.. so I suppose it would serve both purposes.

It may be selfish in a sense but previously in the past, Cousins on record said that he is focused on getting Ws for the Kings and that's his highest priority coming into the season.

I wouldn't read too much into that statement at all. Besides you'd rather a player go out and get "his" when he's young, on a young team. That's no different than 90% of rookies.

Sooner rather than later the "team concept" will require DMC to "get his" so I don't see the issue. We aren't talking about a role player. We are talking about a guy who's expected to be a long time major piece to the franchise.

If he's supposed to just fit in please take his pictures down off the buildings around town now!

Exactly.

We are looking to this kid to be the 2nd major component of a contending team. Why would we want him to blend in and become a role player in any way shape or form. What he needs to do is continue to come out with the mind set that he is out there to prove something. And if he demands the ball and demands the touches that go along with being a cornerstone of a team then I say good for him. Because thats what why we brought the guy in.

Very encouraging to see that DeMarcus is filled with confidence, that can only do wonders for him and things might get to his head sometime but I am sure he will be fine in that regard.

The NBA season is long, with many twists and turns. It is all there for DMC. He just needs to show it on the floor. If he is defending, grabbing lots of boards and scoring in the paint he will get his minutes. My advice to DMC would be don't be concerned with those other rookies, just play ball!

Being ROY and playing within the concept of a team aren't mutually exclusive, and you can make the argument if he makes the team better it will help his cause.
