Good riddance I say, we can spend the money better elsewhere and get a kicker as good or almost as good out of the draft. Good job by Ruskell to exercise restraint in this situation.

Wow. What a douchenozzle that guy is. All that stuff about "the businessman." Like you're the suffering proletarian, making millions of dollars to kick a football.
You also have to love his prediction that the defending five-time division champion, which has been a model of cap management and roster stability, is about to do "a lot of shifting in the next year," while the aging 3-13 team is on the verge of breaking out. (But that part is understandable, since all athletes want to lie to us and tell us it's all about winning.)
Good riddance, Josh. You're not worth that money. Don't be surprised when your 3-13 team finds itself strapped for cash, unable to get better in the free agent market, and wondering why the hell they wasted so much money on a kicker.

I just read the entire Brown interview.
I have to say, I agree with Brown 120 %. I absolutely LOVE his attitude. He's basically daring you to compare him to other kickers his age. The reality is, there is no kicker of Josh Brown's caliber his age. The only kicker that is remotely near him in terms of talent is Neil Rackers. But as far as his heart? NO ONE has Josh Brown's heart. He is fearless. He has come through for the Seahawks multiple times. Remember, one year he kicked 4 game winners- those are 4 games we could have easily lost and not made the playoffs.
You can make the argument that kickers are an insignificant piece to the puzzle but you can't evade reality: If you were in the Super Bowl and you needed a 55 yard field goal to win the game, would you pay 7-8 million more to have Josh Brown try? or let Olindo Mare determine your fate?
I think it's pathetic that some of the fans are bashing Brown. This guy, easily, has been one of the top 2 or 3 consistent players the Seahawks have had during the past 5 years. He has more heart than ANYONE on Seattle. What the hell is he supposed to do? Take less money in a stadium with inconsistent weather? You hit game winner after game winner and your team doesn't want to pony up a nice signing bonus for you- and you believe you are the best kicker in football (and rightfully so), what the hell is he supposed to do?
Josh Brown also made a good point. Also he said Adam Vinateri has only tried about 5 field goals 50+ yards (he's actually tried 19). Josh Brown has tried 23 (if you include the post seasoN). 23!!! and he's 7 years younger. And he's over 50 % (AV is not) from 50+. He has been placed in wayyyy more pressure situations than Adam Vinateri, the only reason why AV gets attention is because he's done it at opportune moments (e.g. Super Bowl, hello!) and with more popular teams (New England).
Josh Brown deserves every bit of the signing bonus he got, and has every right to believe he is the best kicker because he has been more clutch than any kicker of the last 5 years. Case closed.

Brown wanted to leave, and the Rams overpaid to get him. It's that simple.

That's not what the article implies. He wanted to stay, Seattle wasn't willing to front end the signing bonus to keep him. The value of a 4 million dollar signing bonus today is a lot less than it being divided over the course of a few years (when you factor dollar deflation + being able to invest more money early).
People are acting like Josh Brown is an ass or prick. As much as Brown has done for Seattle, the least people can do is respect him getting a better deal for him and his family...
Fairweather fans...

They were going to make him the highest paid kicker in the game, weren't they? Every team/general manager HAS TO have a point where they say no more! There must be a point where you realize that you're hurting the team by taking care of the individual too much.
Hey, the Seahawks hit their limit (a more than fair one), the Rams overpaid, and for this reason Josh wanted to leave. Like I said, it's that simple. If the Rams hadn't wanted to overpay him, then he would have wanted to stay here.
It's disingenuous for Brown to say that he wanted to stay here. He could have stayed if he wanted to, and been paid handsomely for it.

I don't think you are understanding Brown's point. They didn't want to front load the signing bonus, they wanted to spread it out.
Let's say we both sign for 5 years 15 million, but you get 5 of your million upfront, and I get mine spread out through the length of my contract. That is huge! For one, you can take that 5 million now and invest it and potentially make more than your contract by it's end, where as if you are only getting 1 million upfront you don't have that luxury. Plus, the value of 5 million today is greater than 5 million spread out over 5 years.
I don't see anything he said that was disingenuous? All he wanted was to have his salary front-loaded. Sonics are capped out, so they felt he wasn't a priority. When we watch Olindo Mare miss potential game winners, let's see what our stance is then. Further, you can look at it from his perspective. If it's only a matter of a few million upfront, why wouldn't they give it to him? I mean we are talking about PAUL ALLEN- it's not like money is that big an issue.
Josh Brown deserves every penny he gets and then some. His contract will be obsolete, anyways, the very next time someone like Neil Rackers signs a long term deal. We are penny pinching and for a kicker of Brown's caliber we should have hooked him up.

I understand you just fine. If they didn't want to give him more money "up-front", then it was their prerogative not to do so. Paying more money up-front is paying more money. They had reached their limit. You've got to know when to hold them, and when to fold them. Brown didn't have to leave; he wanted more money than they were willing to pay, and he found someone else who was willing to overpay for his services. Case closed.
I don't blame them for merely wanting to make him the highest paid kicker in the game. There are many who believe that was too much to pay already.

Lol. Where does this come from? His KJR interview was a little weird. I'd take the money and run but then again I am a slave to the business man so I'm more than a little biased.
But to call someone a fairweather fan is a little stupid. This is normally what happens when players leave. Have you ever listened to sports radio?

I'd rather maximize my chance of being in the Super Bowl in the first place. And the way to do it is not to tie up my salary cap on the kicker.

Anjonez, I try to tolerate your asinine rants most of the time, but here is where I draw the line. No "idiot kicker" (to use Peyton Manning's apt expression) has any business claiming to have more "heart" than the guys who tackle and block and run and catch and throw. Period. You've outdone yourself on absurdity here.
More to the point, kickers are remarkably interchangeable, and also notoriously volatile from year to year. As a matter of fact, Olindo Mare was once a Pro Bowler, but now he isn't.
Brown's four game-winners in one season were a great accomplishment. But it's the height of stupidity to look at that accomplishment and conclude that Brown is worth four extra wins a season. There is a very good chance he'll be worth zero extra wins a season.
But I guess I'm not surprised that you liked his interview, because his thoughts were rambling, disjointed and incoherent, and even sounded borderline paranoid at times. That must have really resonated.

Where's all this Neil Rackers love come from? I don't understand why Brown gets so much love because apparently he has an inate skill that allows him to boot 50+ yard game winners all the time...and then he's tied to Neil Rackers, who can hit a 50+ yarder...but hasn't always done so when the game is on the line. Look at his kicks when there's a close score in the 4th or it's the last two minutes in the half, and tell me he's as impressive as he's made out to be by some people in here...
The whole "Mare is done" argument is the same argument we see with Sexson. Since Mare had a bad year last year, like Sexson he's clearly done. I don't really buy that.
