whats the deal with Roger Mason Jr?

Post#1 » by fishmike » Thu Sep 30, 2010 4:17 pm

I thought he played really well for the Spurs 2 years ago.. then got squeezed out of the rotation last year for parts. Whats the story on him? Knick fan here... just trying to get a feel for his game. Thoughts?

He was great for us 2 years ago. He hit clutch shots, shot the lights out and made big plays. But then he managed to get himself into Pops doghouse and just couldn't get out. Plus I think the emergence of George Hill really lead to Mason's decline.

This. Once you're in Pop's doghouse, your days are numbered in SA. Udrih, Udoka, Francisco Elson etc.

Well, 2 years ago Manu was injured a lot and that opened up minutes for Roger Mason to perform. What happened last year IMO was a combination of Manu being healthy (less minutes for Mason) and also his hand problem. I forgot what it was.. something with his fingers or thumb or whatever but required him to wear some protective stuff and tapes. He was still wearing it in the playoffs and even he admits that it effected his shooting. Also add that after Mason knows playing time is hard to come by with Manu healthy, George Hill improving, he ask for a trade during midseason and he was on a contract year.

I would think those are good enough reasons to get in Pop's doghouse.

He's as one dimensional a player as you could possibly imagine. However, if you stick him within a shooting role off the bench, you could potentially have a useful reserve.

I wish Roger Mason can stick to being a spot up shooter. I personally don't mind him at all if he could do that. At the same time, I don't know if that's because of him (Roger Mason) or the coach (Pop). From day one, Pop raved about his versatility (Huh???), ability to create his own shot (WTF), and ability to run the point (Hell no).

Knowing what I know now, am I surprised Mason suddenly think he's more than just a shooter? Nope.

Mason can contribute, as long as you don't expect a lot from him and look at him as REGGIE MILLER.
