Matt Ryan slides - What to Do

Post#1 » by daddyfivestar » Mon Apr 7, 2008 8:46 pm

Proposition: If Ryan slides past Baltimore (and Chicago/Detroit!) do the Vikings...
1 - Take him
2 - Pass for someone else ie DE or OT, as most mocks have
3 - Try to make a trade the pick to a team that covets him

I like #3. If ATL with 34, 37, and 48 in the 2nd round was willing to deal 34 and 37 for the 17th pick of Ryan, I would say do it. Miami has 32 and 57 as well, but that is a bit less beneficial than the other.

Along with their own 47, three areas could be addressed in the top 47 picks. DE, QB, and OL. Nice scenario could be 34 Lawrence Jackson DE, 37 Anthony Collins OT, 47 QB Chad Henne.
Or just take Ryan with 17.

Actually based on the value chart 34/37 is overpaying a bit, but for a QB it could be done.

I'd take Ryan. It's not too often you get a shot at a franchise QB in the NFL.

I personally do not think we will have the 1st rd pick anyway due to the Allen situation.

But I would not move up to get Allen. I have no issue getting a developmental/back up QB in the 3rd or 4th rd but I want to give Tjax every chance to succeed this year. If he busts then we move on a vet in the offseason. But drafting a high profile rookie QB will cause cap damage, but also be a blow to his confidence.

Yep Rev, dvlpmntl QB is the call w TJ in a make/break year. The question was really could Minn use the slot as leverage to gain more pix ala Dall last year.

No reason to create a QB controversy on a playoff ready team. From the other thread, Booty, Ainge, or even Josh Johnson (Brad Johnson clone but smarter!) In the 4th imo.

And agree, I really really hope KC is picking 17!

Trade to the highest bidder like Dallas did last year. Maybe they can get something like a future first out of Baltimore or Atlanta, which would be huge.

You forgot to add Woodson and Dixon, who are very high on our boards for dvlpmntl QB.

btw, I think there is a better chance of Vanna White getting a sex change then Baltimore passing on Matt Ryan.

No way Jose to Woodson, but I would love DD maybe in the 5th. Balty does have 38 to use on a QB if they feel Ryan is not the end-all, be-all and one of their top guys slides to 8. One of Brohm, Flacco or Henne could be there for them. McNair has pretty much forced their hand, but you never know - they won with Dilfer! Also, didn't Harbaughs brother coach/recruit Josh Johnson? Connection?

If Ryan somehow slides to us, I will have no problem drafting him.

Unless he slides to the 2nd. He's a must take at 47.
