Leafs: October game thread discussion

Brew666 wrote:Alright, I'm sure the peeps in here have seen who got sent the Marlies, who's staying, etc...It's obvious fluff when they say that vets have to earn their spot if they want to make the team...Mitchell had a horrible camp and Hanson was much improved. It looks like this move was made b/c Hanson is on a 2-way and Mitchell on a 1-way and would have to clear waivers...are they saying that vets have to earn their spot for motivation or is it just juice for the fans? Don't really see anything unexpected here...Finger maybe goes down when Lebda returns from injury? Unless of course another one of our D goes down

In case you haven't seen the final roster, here you go:

Forwards
Versteeg – Bozak – Kessel
Kulemin – Grabovski – MacArthur
Sjostrom – Brent – Armstrong
Orr – Brown – Mitchell
Zigomanis

Defence
Phaneuf – Beauchemin
Kaberle – Komisarek
Schenn – Gunnarsson
Finger

Injured: Lebda and Lashoff

Goal
Giguere
Gustavsson

Headed to the Marlies: Hanson, Kadri, Caputi and Rynnas.
On waivers: Richmond, Rosehill and Zigomanis

Mirtle from G&M was saying Zigomanis has been waived but is still with the team, as per PPP...not sure what exactly that means though.

Why they kept Mitchell and sent down Hanson, I do not know. that 4th line is REALLY strange.

The roster looks so yawn without Kadri. I mean, even if he struggled in the exhbition games, why not just let him play out of whatever trouble he's having? It's not like this team will be contending anytime soon.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not a fan of Schenn being on the third line. I mean yeah there's always the "where else would you put him?" but I would have liked him to have some more responsibility by now if you understand what I'm saying.

This lineup is definitely yawn, but that's almost a good thing...it sorta means we are putting our best line up out there...beyond Caputi and Hanson, I more or less agree with the cuts. And even with Caputi, it was a bit of a numbers game.

I wish Kadri blew the doors off in the pre-season but he didn't...Toronto has horrible luck and has also been known to rush rooks (or they were overhyped from the beginning) so after a pre-season like Kardi just had, I think its better for his development to be with the Marlies. After pre-season, I see him as being ranked 3rd for forwards to be called up behind Caputi and Hanson.

No idea why Hanson is being sent down, I thought he had that 4th line C job sealed with his preaseason play.

I'm glad Kadri got send down to the minors, the only way I could see him contributing is if he was in a top 6 forward role, but at this point he think he's better than he really is and it wouldn't help our team right now. He needs to get his feet wet in the AHL before we bring him up.

Thats just my two cents.

We need goaltending to do anything.

And Kadri getting sent down is not a big deal. Not unless he makes it a big deal. He needs to go and rip it up with the Marlies. It's not like the big team will be on a winning streak. Leafs will be losing, so there will be plenty of opportunities to bring up help from the Marlies.

Hes on the second line now. He replaced Komisarek and he was by far the best defenseman in camp and in pre season

Mitchell was kept cause if he got placed on waivers most likely someone would claim him..

And that's a loss?

I understand they don't want to give him away but what would his trade value even be? He was the worst centre in preseason for a team that doesn't even have one true NHL centremen.

The problem every year with the Leafs has been always with the management thinking they have some chance to compete, so they throw their youngsters in the dumpster and go with what they have. I felt that Bozak and the rest shouldn't been brought earlier last year the moment they started off terrible.

Hansen, Caputi, and Kadri should be with the Leafs no matter what. Let them develop, 3-4 exhibition games aren't enough to prove what you are.

They arent going to play top 6 minutes, so there is no point in keeping them on the team. There is nothing wrong with making these guys earn their minutes.

Bozak had a great presason last year and he still played on the Marlies. He was called up towards the end and he played really well. Guys like Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan all played in the minors before playing in the NHL

Keep in mind some of these "young" guys are just that...young. They're not good. Only Kadri has the pedigree to actually be good. In hockey, just about any Joey Dorsey can play on the 4th line, and maybe even the 3rd. You need to find players for the top two lines.

Kadri......he doesn't just need to develop. He needs to get stronger and play more like a man. We can't have him settle into a role up here as a checker or good "two-way player". Let him develop into a scorer vs men in the AHL.

I don't think we have a perennial Norris candidate on our hands but he's definitely an asset. Goals shouldn't be a problem for him b/c he'll pretty well be on our powerplay the entire time, but my big thing is that he stays in position. If he can be responsible in his own end and avoid the big check and stay in position instead, I'll be happy.

slow lateral quicks and questionable decision making are his problems.
last year, he didn't score. he also doesn't crunch players like he used to.
IF he can start scoring and plays with a mean streak, he'll be good (but not amazing). i see him and Komisarek basically being the same player except Phaneuf can score.

Dont know. Hes gotten better as the pre season progressed. Offensively, he looks better than last year. I still think hes pressing though.

Check out these two videos about Phaneuf's offseason preparation. Damn, Prince Edward Island is BEAUTIFUL.
