I don't see Jeter as the potential problem. At 37 I don't think anyone actually believes that he can maintain top "Jeter form" much longer. But, as has been mentioned, he's an icon and you pay icon's even if they can't produce like you'd like to or in their prime. Jorge Posada IMHO is the "problem". You'd have to be a truly jaded Yankee fan to not see that Posada behind the plate is not getting the Yankees anywhere and puts even more strain on their pitching staff. Posada has never been the greate defensive catcher nor the best game caller but you lived with it cause of his offensive production. But the offense has gone down and right now it's become a danger to even put him out there as far as not being able to hold anyone from taking an extra base. Sure Posada is one of the last remnants of the great Yankee teams of the early 2000's but you can only have so many "icon's of the past" on a team without having it start to be a detriment. And in a scenario where you have to choose between Jeter or Posada you'd have to take Jeter. The Yanks have a plethora of catching prospects in the minors and I would think that it would behoof them to at least consider Romine at some point soon for that job.

I completely agree, Posada hasn't been that guy this year. He only has one year left on his deal and I'd imagine Montero would get some time next year as part-time catcher and part-time DH. I really don't see who they could go after in the catching market either considering there is a massive drop-off after the top 2-3 guys. I really don't think Victor Martinez would be worth the money as a part-time catcher and part-time DH. Although, I have a gut feeling that Martinez and Lee will be the two big Yankee acquisitions this winter. -Jitpal

Jeter's defense has sucked this year just as much as Jorge. At least Jorge can put up 120-130 OPS and still be a top 5 hitting catcher.

Thank God Christophersp10 is not the Yanks' GM
