Unless the Wiz brass are unimaginably high on McGee I think you have to take a long hard look at a McGee for Oden swap. A healthy Oden makes almost any team he's on a championship contender. He's taller, longer, and stronger than Howard. Howard, on defense alone, is able to make a team of bums into a championship contender. Imagine what a healthy Oden can do to a team with Blatche, Wall, and Arenas?? Obviously its a huge gamble, but which is the more likely event: 1) McGee being the center on a championship team or 2) Oden staying healthy enough to lead a team to a championship?
.
Thats a really good question. It's not that what we've all seen from Oden is a little big lackluster, but it's more of what we haven't seen. No one knows really what he's capable of in the NBA just yet. This may be somewhat unrelated, but I'm also an Indianapolis Colts fan. (don't worry, I don't live in the DC area) Bob Sanders keeps on getting hurt every year, but the one year when the Colts had him for their playoff run, they won the Super Bowl. Is it worth the trade just to hope that Oden is healthy for the playoffs? Like the Colts without Bob Sanders, I think the Zards could make the playoffs without him, but once the playoffs start, there's such a slight chance that they win it without someone like Oden.
I don't think that I would be willing to make this gamble just yet, but I really think that this could possibly be McGee's breakout year. I'm expecting a lot from him and I believe that he has the ability to become that championship caliber center. From summer league and the midnight scrimmage, he and J-dub (Wall- trying to work a new nick name?) really worked well together. Obviously he's capable offensively to be productive, but before I think about trading him for a guy who's had 3 knee surgeries, I'm going to have to see if he can play a little bit of defense in his 2nd year in Flip's system.
