OT: Help me save some money

Post#1 » by jazzfan1971 » Fri Oct 8, 2010 7:24 pm

I'm looking to cut costs a bit. And one area that I think has a lot of wiggle room is my phone/internet/cable bill.

I'm with comcast for internet and cable. It's like 150 a month.
Phone with ATT I think it's like 60$ a month.

I need a DVR, FSRM, and 2 phones.

Don't need blazing internet. Don't need or currently get pay channels. Don't need any text or web for phone.

So, what kinds of deals are out there????

Well, why are you paying so much for internet + cable?
FSN is on the basic package, and I know you can get just internet from comcast for 65 at regular pice without any bundling, so you're paying like 85-90 just for tv.

First thing I would do is call comcast and ask them for the best price they can give you on just basic plus internet. Tell them there is no way you're doing 150. If they won't do anything for you, then start looking around. Lots of times if you threaten to quit, they may negotiate a deal for you.

Most likely, your cheapest option is bare minimum from dish and then basic dsl from qwest.

i just got a deal through comcast for 6 months...its sick...

i got the digital preferred tier (one of the upper echelon tiers)
20 speed internet (the one above the standard)
hd dvr free for 12 months

i got that for 75 bucks a month for 6 months...then it goes to 110 i think...still a great deal

and with cell phones depending on where you work check to see if they have employee discounts...i get a 24% discount on my verizon bill just for working at the bank

DirecTV will at least give you a sweet starting bonus. Like 30 bucks for a year or something. It's better than Comcast.

Well, called Comcast. Got their minimum cable and internet for 84 a month. It's quite a bit less than I was paying but not a great deal as we see above.

I'll check out Digis.

DirectTV is great for the first year. Tons of Channels (including FSNUT), really low price (its around 30 without DVR, 10$ more for it including HD). After the first year its not so great. My DirecTV bill went up to about 80$. That's without any internet mind you. My internet is up to about 60$ a month on top of that. I have QWEST.

The internet is not as good as Comcast, and my television feed goes out with any sort of bad weather.

On top of that they are incredibly stingy with any customer service. I moved and moved again 6 months later and they charged me 250$ to move the second time.

Comcast is not treat either though. What I have come to understand is that each service has their ups and their downs. So it really doesnt matter. The best option is just to complain as much as possible until they give you a better deal. I did that with DirecTV and they got me down to 60$ a month.

I'm in the same boat, we have comcast bundle here with phone/internet together and it's too expensive! I don't even have cable and we're paying over $100+ I'm looking into others..possibly direct TV. All I care for honestly is internet/jazz games since we have cell phones.

I'm even looking into NBA broadband although sounds like reviews are crappy..but i'm glad to hear you guys like dish network and it comes with FSN...I just want the cheapest HD possible.

I canceled my tv all to gether and just have broadband with comcast. Some one from the 360 jazz site gave me a link to watch the game online and I feel its suitable http://atdhe.net/index.html. Comcast really doesn't cut it when it comes to Tv soon ill switch to Direct Tv which offers much more on top of that I can sign up for the international packages. I think if you sign up through costco you get 180 costco gift card. Or I heard there's a way to get two receivers and split one with someone else and split the cost but Im not too sure about that method.

That requires you uninstall the installation of one box and install a dish in the new place. The cards are what matters for subscription but I think they get set up to be box specific. You have to bring the box back to the main house if you move.

Whatever you do, do NOT get dish. I heard today that they lost over 20 channels, including fsn utah as well as quite a few other good channels. I don't know the details, but avoid it!

There is a way to group up with friends and share a DirecTV bill. All you need to do is find a compatible DTV dish and get it properly installed. If you have that, you can take the box anywhere you want and it will work great. Its against the rules, obviously, but still possible. I know a few guys who do it and they are getting everything that DTV offers, with NFL Sunday Ticket and League Pass for 35/month apiece.

^did not know you can do that..mm.. I have a relative that already has an account..

You know what I *WISH* they would do? Major league baseball came out with a streaming feature on the PS3 year or so ago. You can select what team you want to watch, has a built in calendar feature showing game time and stats and it streams straight to the TV. No need for cable..why the NBA doesn't have this out yet I don't know.

Seems like the perfect purchase if you want to follow *your* one NBA team; instead of paying for a broadband *follow 7 teams* junk.
