Glen Coffee...............Retires?

Glen Coffee, according to our 49ers Rapid Reporter Michael Erler , missed Thursday afternoon practice and was a no-show for Friday morning's session as well.
The reason for Coffee's absence was unknown, until Friday afternoon (yes, it's the 13th) when the youngster out of Alabama announced his sudden and shocking retirement.
Matt Maiocco of Bay Area CSN first reported the news on Twitter, stating simply that "Coffee announces retirement" before following up with an update in which coach Mike Singletary apparently said that "Coffee's retirement decision came out of the blue."
That's understating it -- Coffee was born in 1987, which doesn't exactly put him in the same age bracket as Brett Favre, John Kasay, or any of the other elderly NFL players.
So, needless to say, this news is, as Erler put it, "shocking."
In fact, it was about a year ago that I was pretty excited to draft Coffee in fantasy football leagues -- if Frank Gore went down, it stood to reason that he could be a sleeper for any team's bench. Thinking that he's out of the league now is nothing short of mindboggling.
There's a distinct possibility that Coffee is dealing with some sort of personal (thinking emotional here, perhaps?) issues -- that's 100 percent speculation on my part, but if anyone has a better explanation for why a 23-year-old would simply up and retire from the game of football just before the season started, I'm all ears.

Yeah, that decision was shocking. Must be some emotional issues, I hope he's okay right now.

On the general NFL thread, someone said he's leaving football to become a minister

Yeah I saw that. I also read that he "lost his passion for football in his last year at Alabama."

I thought he'd be a great backup this season, he worked well with Gore. Now the Niners will have a rookie starting if Gore gets injured.

Strangest thing I've seen for a long time. But hey, better to have a rookie than an uninterested backup.
LaMarcus for Heisman!!!

Roster:Lillard/Mathews/Batum*/LA/Lopez

*Its not pronounced with a !@#$ing s, he's french. It's Nico-la, not Nico-las.

As long as Frank Gore doesn't retire I could care less. Dixon looked solid in his preseason debut against the Colts. I'm sure the 49ers will bring in another RB before the season starts.

When I heard this, the only thing that crossed my mond was "Yayyy another waste of a high draft pick."

Honestly I never really though much of him as a prospect, but would have liked to seen/gotten more from a high draft pick. I guess there was a reason why he was considered a reach where he got drafted.

Im seriously starting to wonder how much the 9er brass researches these prospects in off the field matters.

Oh well: Anthony Dixon > Glen Coffee

Anyone else notice that the 49ers are cursed in the 3rd round? McKillop, Coffee, Reggie Smith, Jason Hill, Brandon Williams, Derek Hamilton, Andrew Williams, Kevan Barlow, John Engleberger, Jeff Chandler, Anthony Parker, Chris Ruhman, Daryl Price, Antonio Armstrong, Kevin Mitchell, Adrian Hardy...

Going back 17 years, the only good 3rd rounders are Frank Gore, Shawnte Spencer, and Greg Clark(who retired young due to injury)

One of MANY players that quit on Jed York/Singletary. It's an ongoing trend.

I agree it`s becoming harder and harder to look at these as a series of isolated events.

Recently retired Glen Coffee arrested for having concealed weapon

When former San Francisco 49ers running back Glen Coffee(notes) retired from the NFL this summer at the age of 23, he said it was because God told him to leave football and enter the ministry. He didn't mention whether or not he was supposed to accept his higher calling while carrying an automatic pistol.
Coffee was arrested in Florida on Friday morning for carrying a concealed firearm, according to TMZ. Police found the weapon cocked in his center console during a traffic stop.
The former NFL player had been pulled over for speeding in his 2008 Cadillac and was soon discovered to be driving a car without insurance or registration. When police searched the car before it was to be towed, they found the loaded weapon.
Police arrested Coffee and charged him with a third-degree felony, which is punishable in Florida by up to five years in jail. The arrest came in Coffee's hometown of Ft. Walton Beach.
In his rookie season with the 49ers, Coffee ran the ball 83 times for 226 yards and one touchdown. He was a third-round pick out of Alabama, where he made first-team All-SEC in his junior season.
