OT: What's it like to live in Sacramento?

There's a chance I might land a job out there and was just wondering what life in the city was like. I am a southern cali native and lived in the L.A. area for 12 years but never traveled to northern California.

Was just curious on what there is to do in town (aside from going to Kings games), how's the food, people, whatever lol.

Well Norcal is prolly the weed capital so if you like smokin weed you will blend right in. I grew up in Sactown and live here now but lived in Seattle, Amsterdam, London, Lyon (France), and various parts of Louisianna and I can tell you Sactown is a nice place to raise a family. Not the most exciting place but housing is cheap for Cali and its hot hot in the summer so there are a lot of hotties in skimpy clothing all over the place. Its a short drive to the city (SF) and a short drive to Tahoe/mountains so whatever you like to do you prolly dont have to go too far. Seafood is terrible around here. Overall its a nice place to call home.

Well Shaquille O'neal and Coach Phil Jackson decried Sacramento as a "cow town."
Does that help you out at all?

There are good looking women here but I'm going to tell you that if you can get at a girl in Sacramento you can get at a girl ANYWHERE. Women here are kind of backwards.

Try that in San Fran. I thought Sactown women were confusing. The straight women in the bay are NUTS.

I was born here and have lived here my entire life, but I find it really hard to describe. You'll love it and loathe it is pretty much the best way I can describe it. Not quite as much to do, but the women and weed are definitely better than LA, I can guarantee that. The people are generally more laid back and down to earth too I would say.

This is exactly how I'd describe it.

I would way rather be friends with a NorCal stereotype than a SoCal stereotype.

Make sure you get a place with a good air conditioner because you'll need it. Lots of rental housing in midtown and downtown. The east side has lots of old nice homes. You might want to check out the Pocket area too. There's lot's of nearby cities and unincorporated county areas too.

If you like to get around via bicycle then midtown or downtown might be your best bets. You might also consider the People's Republic of Davis if pedaling is your thing.

Make sure you do the speed limit when driving in Roseville, Lincoln and Citrus Heights. Speed traps everywhere. I've personally witnessed a half dozen RPD doing zero tolerance speed enforcement near road construction zones at 5 AM. I saw people getting pulled over for doing 30-35 in the 25 MPH cone zone. I rarely go over the speed limit so it was no big deal for me.

The biggest surprise to me about living in Sacramento is the food. There's actually quite a few good restaurants. If you're into cooking your own food you'll have no problem finding a farmer's market somewhere near you since Sacramento is so close to the central valley.

If you see long lines of people outside every Carl's Jr you drive past it's because the Kings are good again and it's Demarcus Cousins bobble head day.

You're 2-3 hours from gambling and winter snow in the Sierra Nevadas. If gambling is your thing there are lot's of Indian Casinos in the greater Sac area. You're also 2-3 hours from the beach, beware of great white sharks if you surf. The Napa Valley is 1-1.5 hours away.

Sacramento is a better place then I expected. The heat is the toughest thing to get used to.

FWIW that is WEST Sacramento and nobody goes there

Sounds like a cool place. It's nice to hear some more realistic opinions too. I remember visiting some rap message boards, and people were describing Sacramento as a war zone.

On a related note, it had a really nice rap scene in the 90's, but it seems to have quietened down a lot.

I grew up in Sacramento and only recently moved away after ~23 years total. It is like most places, there are pluses and minuses depending on what you like and what part of town you are living in.

Weather is relatively pleasant other than the times in summer when it gets over 100, so make sure you got a good air-conditioner. If you have even slight allergies they will act up in Sacramento because it sits in a bowl-shaped valley with a lot of agriculture that tends to trap pollen and smog. It is nice to be a few hours from the Sierra's and a few hours from the Bay Area as it means there are plenty of nice places and activities within driving distance.

I would highly recommend you do everything possible to find a nice place to live somewhat near where you work. The large amounts of suburban sprawl means there is a lot of traffic that can make commuting from one side of town to the other extremely frustrating. I was never really into the night life so I can't really comment on it much other than to say it seemed about the same as most cities that size. Surprising number of great restaurants around town.

I still have a weird sort of love for Sacramento since I grew up there, spent most of my life (to this point) there, and root for the Kings. It is a decent place to live, but I wouldn't want to go back and live there unless a really great job brought me back.
