The Hawks have made inking Horford their top priority and are prepared to extend a large offer to the All-Star in the next few weeks. This means that Jamal Crawford, who wants an extension of his own, will likely have to wait out the season before signing a new deal. Noah, who has been offered a five-year, $57 million extension by the Bulls, is waiting for a deal closer to $65 million but hopes to work out a deal that would keep him in Chicago. In both of these situations, the two sides are on the same page but just need to work out the numbers in the next thirty days.

I think it depends on what you think the open market will be like next year. The market for a "good young player but not a superstar" was 11-12 million when Iguodala,Smith,Ellis,and Deng were free agents. Horford would have obviously gotten David Lee/Rudy Gay type money if he was a free agent this year but 5/65 million is probably what he's worth in a normal year.

Sounds like the only thing holding up a contract extension is the terms of the contract. Purchasing his jersey will be a top priority of mine once he signs the extension.

The Hawks All-Star big says there’s no movement in contract extension talks with Atlanta. It's still a matter of two sides trying to predict the impact of the next CBA and do the best for themselves. If they can find the right middle ground they will. If not then it will be a matter of the Hawks matching the best offer for Al after the lockout. I still don't see them letting him walk.

evildallas- just remember that no one knows what the new rules of Free Agency will be. It could be that restricted free agency will be gone under the new CBA and Horford would be made an unrestricted free agent. No one really expects that but its just good to keep in mind that none of us have any idea at all what the new rules will look like.

Right, and maybe it could also be the same rules for another year since the current CBA can be extended until the end of 2011-12
As the players seems to prefer the current one that the future one, they could prefer play under the current CBA one more year than making lock-out
It all depends on owners wanting or not to extend the current CBA for another season.

The other thing that I think has been underdiscussed is the idea that the players could decertify the union. If there isn't a union then there can't be a salary cap and there can't be restricted free agency. In the end- the owners are just trying to protect themselves against their own dumb decisions and its hard for me to see why the players would agree to a CBA thats significantly more restrictive than what is currently in place. THere has been lots of talk about the NFL players decertifying the union but not much about the NBA players doing so.
