I have the 3rd, 8th, and 13th picks

Post#1 » by aaa » Mon Oct 18, 2010 9:25 am

in a 10 team H2H, 9 category league. Instead of rebounds, we have offensive and defensive boards as their own categories.

Assuming I used the 3rd pick on Dwight Howard, who would you select at 8 and 13 to complement him. Obviously punting FT's. I don't pick again until 53.

At 8 I was thinking about Deron Williams or Steph Curry. Id Dwyane Wade fell I would take him in a heartbeat.

The real dilemma comes at 13. Amare? Lopez? Lee? Do I reach for Rondo or Josh Smith? Keep in mind Im trying to employ a draft strategy based on Dwight Howard.

What do you think I should do with those picks?

http://basketballmonster.com/PlayerRankings.aspx

Use this tool to get new rankings, under your rules, if you are punting FT%, Josh Smith is ranked 3rd. If you don't use a pick on him, you are really blowing the having Dwight strategy. I would even take him 8th overall just to be sure you get him.

Rondo makes more sense as your PG then Curry or Deron Williams. He was the steals leader in 2009-10 and probably will be again this year, plus his assists are very high and FG% is good as well.

If you take Dwight, Josh Smith, and Rondo with first three picks, you are well on your way to winning the rebounding categories, blocks, steals, fg%, and assists.

I was going to say pretty much the same things. Pairing Dwight, Smith, and rondo gives you a distinct advantage in both defensensive stats, fg%, off. and def. rebounds, and assists. With turnovers not counted as a category you get 6/9 categories covered. Then you add a high scoring/three point shooter with the next pick and your set with your first 4 guys.

I'd actually suggest not worrying about points and 3s too much, you need another PG to take advantage of Rondo's assists. Ray Felton might work for you, he should get 6-7 assists a game in NY and he is pretty good at steals, should also be available in the 5th round.

Your goal should be to continue adding guys who strengthen your core stats. If you can add guys who hit 3s and score lots of points who can help with another category too, great. If not, just try to make it so you win those six categories most weeks. Below is a pretty good guide on guys who fit well with Dwight.

Thanks for the advice so far. What do you guys think of:

3. Howard
8. Deron Williams
13. Rondo

and then trying to snag someone like Nene at 53. Perhaps:

53. Nene
68. Millsap
73. Bogut
88. Okafor
93. Hickson
108.
113.

Does the Howard strategy still work without Josh Smith in this case? I don't feel great about using the 13 on him. I wouldnt draft all these bigs, just thinking about reasonable places to get them.

There's no reason not to take Josh Smith if you're taking Dwight. None.

What exactly makes Josh Smith a better fit than Brook Lopez or Amare considering I use the 8th pick on an elite point guard? Especially if I can get guys like Okafor and Bogut late in the draft. I don't pick from 13-53. I want as much punch as possible from my first 3 picks. I like Josh Smith Im just looking for a sexier use of the 3, 8, and 13 picks in a ten team draft.

If I were to scrap the Howard plan and start from scratch, what would you think is the best use of the 3/8/13 combination?

Josh Smith is the single best source of STL + BLK, while also being the best fantasy passing big man in the league. He also gets a respectable amount of points on good FG%, and rebounding numbers similar to Amare.

Do you know how many H2H owners would love to have Dwight, Josh Smith and Rondo? It is a proven formula for winning a league. None of those guys you listed will compliment Dwight like Josh Smith. Deron makes 0 sense to take over Josh Smith.

You know you could always take LeBron James or Chris Paul with your 3rd pick and not do the Dwight strategy. You're not really locked into it by any means, 3rd pick is a good spot to get a good all-around player in fantasy basketball.

How would you guys use the 8/13 picks to build around LeBron or CP3?

I'm beginning to think I should take CP3 at 3, and pray that Dwight falls to 8. Then I could draft Josh Smith at 13, and ideally I would have

3. Paul
8. Howard
13. Josh Smith

If Howard is not available at 8, who is the best player to pair Paul with?

Is it just bad strategy to build around Howard with those picks?

Honestly i dont like the howard strategy.

Im much more of a balanced attack type person.

Id go
Lebron at 3
He will likely be available with paul and durant going before him
I take pau gasol at 8 he is the best all around big and he doesnt cause you to punt ft%.
And at 13 i take steve nash. That gives you the most balanced lineup possible. You do well in pts assists rebs percentages stls andd blks.

Ok, to those who know how to execute the Howard strategy, how does this look:

3. Howard
8. Wade
13. Rondo

Keep in mind i dont pick again until 53

53. Nene
68. Bogut/Jrue Holiday
73. Okafor / Andre Miller
88. JJ Hickson
93. Carl Landry / Boris Diaw
108. Terrence Williams
113.

Does that complement Howard well? Perhaps Howard/Curry/Rondo?

If you are serious about going for howard, there is absolutely no reaso to not get Rondo and Smith with picks 8 and 13... Forget about sexy picks. A trifecta of Howard/Smith/Rondo is as sexy as it gets... 3pt shooters are easy to find and PG is a very deep position. You'll be able to fill up your team pretty easily.

I would probably go for the howard strategy just because it's fun to do... However, you'd probably be best off drafting Lebron at 3 and build around that with Deron at 8 and a top big (Gasol if you're lucky) at 13

I have Dwight in a dynasty H2H league. I've been building around him for three years, and I know how to build around him. If you take Dwight, which again you really don't have to, then you won't do better than Smith and Rondo. Especially not in a league that values rebounds as much as yours does.

If you want the bigger names, just take LeBron and build around him. You don't have to do the Dwight strategy, and if you do it wrong it'll backfire on you.

So I came out of draft with:

Howard
Rondo
Wade
Nene
Demarcus Cousins
Jrue Holiday
JJ Hickson
Boris Diaw
Terence Williams

What FA's and stats should I be targeting to solidify my roster?

Well seeing how you added 0 good shotblockers to compliment Dwight, I'd start there.

I don't get why people ask for advice, and even when they get the same advice over and over and over, they don't take it. Why ****ing ask in the first place?

I'm amused that the TC took Wade over Josh Smith. When he finishes 6th in his league he will be wondering "What went wrong?" when if he'd gone Smith/Howard/Rondo he legitimately would have been a favorite to win the league.

Just... lulz.
