I would have a hard time parting with Drabek for the main reason he was the big piece in the trade back for Doc. Plus he's still a raw pitcher right now and we need to give him sometime like the rest of the team.

He'll actually be 27 all of next year. But that isn't the problem; his free agent status is.

The game is won and lost with pitching. For a bonafide #1 ace, giving up JPA and Drabek would be worth it.

Whether he is a bona fide ace remains to be seen. He had one terrific season, and two merely solid ones...the worry is that he's more AJ Burnett than Roy Halladay.

Well doesn't Drabek project as a #2 like Burnett if we're lucky anyways? So Greinke would either be what we expect Drabek to do, or a total ace. And we don't have to worry about maxing him out for a few years anyways

I like Drabek, but he's not David Price circa 2008. We're not expecting more than 2008/2010 Greinke out of him

No, we'd have to worry about maxing him out next year. Otherwise, we'd spend 2012 wondering whether he'd bolt in free agency.

We've made a concerted effort to draft promising controllable arms over the last little while. Got to have the patience to let our own system come into its own. Over-paying in prospects for 2 years of Greinke is not the right strategy imo. Use the 'Greinke money' to lock in your young up and comers (Snider/Morrow/Drabek) to club-friendly long term deals before they hit their peak value - ala the Cleveland Indians strategy in the mid-90's and the Hill/Lind deals (which looked really good a year ago and are still quite good). Its not sexy, but we're still building the foundation at this point...

Hard to tab which Greinke you'd get year to year. With his history of depression, I'd find it difficult to justify taking a chance on him at the price KC probably wants for him.
