Where is the zone defense??

Post#1 » by Saberestar » Tue Oct 19, 2010 4:44 pm

I think that is very strange, but our team never have played zone defense in his preseason games and the defense wasn`t good in any moment. In August, I was confident that we'll play a lot of minutes with zone defense (because it was great in Playoffs and we have Hedo at power forward) but now I don't know what to think.

What do you think about it?

It was preseason. Why show our foes anything we don't need to? It was for evaluating players. And we actually saw a ton of blocks from this team. Isn't that a defensive stat?

The zone really should be the last resort. It works well when teams aren't prepared for it (and most teams aren't) but it's easy to exploit when you have time to find it's weaknesses and there are many. I think we're going to go start out with a very light zone but emphasis will be placed on man on man D. If it doesn't work then we'll go to a proper zone.

Personally, I think we should try an ASU type zone. That defense is built for a team with four guard like players and one true center. Why not try it extensively? It definitely shouldn't be what we would start the season with, but if we start sucking, that would be a great idea IMO.

Only problem is it takes a while to learn..

Zone defense allows opponent to grab more offensive boards than man-to-man defense. That's an issue for us as long as defensive rebounding isn't our strength.
