Why don't the Grizzlies sign Gasol to an extension now?

Post#1 » by Laowai » Mon Sep 20, 2010 1:22 am

If Memphis is serious about resigning Gasol why don't they do it now?
It shows the fans and Gasol that they have a interest in him and also the extension could be likely slightly less than the max he would likely receive because of uncertainty in the new CBA.

The ownership finally looks like it is saving face and signing Henry.
This move would show that they are serious plus Gasol will be one of the prime free agents this year and if the Grizzles are serious about him it is the right move. If he balks it also gives Memphis ample to time to make a benefical trade. Yes Memphis can match the offer but that really only leads to a unhappy player.

In a nutshell, they can't - or they likely would have already. Keep in mind Marc was a 2nd round pick. So from what I understand, his extension can't be worked out until after this season, when he'll be an RFA. That said, Heisley likes Marc (from all indications) as much if not more than Rudy, and we saw the $'s he got.

The most important player on the team needs to be kept by any means possible.

Yup - Marc's the heart, soul, spirit, higher consciousness, mind, intellect, and drive of the Grizz.

Did I miss an appropriate descriptive?

Without him we're done-zo.

I think it's Gay's year to shine though.

As GGF said, the Grizz can't give him an extension right now under the CBA.

The question I guess is does Gasol want to remain in Memphis?
That is the concern I know many teams obviously need a C and are willing to offer him a Max contract.
Gasol is one of the 5 best in the East and definitely a top 10 in the league.

Grizzles have the hammer to resign him but is that great policy if his heart isn't there.
While he can't be resigned till the end of the year I think the team should know his feelings on remaining a Grizzle. Better to get value for him in a trade.

Hate to pee in your Wheaties, but Marc is happy in Memphis. He spent his high school years playing here, his parents live and work here and he's happy with the direction that the franchise is headed.

Exactly, Marc is more than happy to remain one of the five best centers in the East here in Memphis.

As a fan of another team who would love to pry Marc from Memphis, let me echo the Grizzlies fans here. Marc seems to love Memphis and will probably look to stay there if the Grizzlies don't low-ball him. He is the face of the Gasol trade for the Grizzlies and the anchor of the team. Keeping him should be vital for Memphis

I hope they screw up though lol. No offense Grizz fans, I want this guy on my team.

I think Marc will re-sign with Memphis, but what would they give up for him in a trade? I'm a Bobcats fan. What would you want from us for him. Untouchable is Gerald Wallace.

I see absolutely nothing on the Bobcat's roster that would entice Memphis to part ways with Gasol. Nothing.

What about a 3 to 4 team trade?

Gasol's value to the Grizz would be too much to overcome in a reasonable trade scenario.

Raptors desperately need a Center, what do you guys think your FO would want for Thabeet if he's available at all. Do you see anything between the raptors and grizz that could work for both sides? I haven't really thought about it, I just like Thabeet's potential.

I could see Thabeet being moved, but I just don't see a fit with the Raptors.
