In-Season Free Agency Thread (Re-named)

Post#1 » by eitanr » Fri Oct 22, 2010 5:14 pm

Unsure if this had been mentioned in another thread, but I believe it needs its own. There is some talent that got leftover from other team's cuts this pre-season. We all know Washington's main needs: a legit athletic SF, a spacer, and a big man, preferabley a legit 5 who can rebound and defend.

Here are some players that got cut who I feel can immensley help the team.

Stephen Lasme (Boston Celtics) SF/PF - A really lanky 3/4 who can rebound and finish well on the break. Played well enough for the Celts to legitmatley have a shot at making the team. They cut him mainly due to Von Wafer's guaranteed deal and with West being out for the 1st 10 games, Wafer got the nod.

Othyus Jeffers (Utah Jazz) SG/SF - I know Chocolate Jordanaire loves the guy, he reminds me of a better version of CDR, smart player and does a lot of things well at the 3, like bring athleticsm, slash and a solid IQ. Those Utah Jazz products also tend to have higher bball IQ in Sloan's complex offensive sets. He isn't the spacer most would covet, but could fill a roll at the 2/3.

Kyle Weaver (OKC Thunder) SG - Can fill the 2-hole nicely, athletic and solid bball IQ. That being said, he too has an improved 3, but not neccesarily the spacer Washington may need.

Danny Green (Cleveland Cavs) SG/SF - It should worry you that Green was cut by the same Cavs team that may have a worse SF rotation right now than the Wiz. Still he showed enough signs in college and in the summer league to warrant a second go at it. Can hit the 3 if given more opporunties as a shooter.

Antonio Anderson (Houston Rockets) SG/SF - Really a nice athletic do-it-all wing who was phenomenal in the D-League. With Houston semi stacked at the 2, it wasn't suprising to see him let go however.

James Gist (San Antonio Spurs) SF - Needs to be in an uptempo system to be fully effective, always had great upside, but couldnt make it on a veteran Spurs' team. Washington could give him a shot to shine though.

Demitrus Nichols (Utah Jazz) SG - Got cut due to the extended wing depth in Utah. Still he has a phenomenal shot like that of Anthony Morrow, and can finish nicely on the break.

Ryan Thompson (Utah Jazz) SF - (From NBAdraft.net) Wing with great size and strength for the position. Possesses a versatile offensive repertoire. Intent on taking his defender off the bounce and attacking the rim. Does a good job cradling the ball, absorbing contact and finishing plays.

Vernon Goodridge (Houston Rockets) PF/C - I love this guy. Crazy athlete and shot blocker also has some nice low post moves. Check out his you tube clips...some nice stuff here: http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2010/7/ ... vite-76ers

JR Giddens (Sacrameno Kings) SF - Nice athlete who has some NBA legs in him. Won't wow you with anything szpecific, but can run the break and defend the 3 slot well. Only concern is that he didn't make it with the Knicks last season, an up tempo team.

Thoughts?

I like this thread, are these all of the cuts to-date? I see several guys on the list that could shine playing along-side Wall....I'll be back.

Orlando cut Stanley Robinson. He's pretty long, but I don't think he has 3 pt range, does he?

He does, but it's inconsistent, and he plays too out of control. UConn has done a HORRIBLE job of developing some very talented players over the last several years.

I'm still a Danny Green believer. But Nichols sounds interesting.

Nichols has nice size (6"8) and at-least he has 3-point range

Robinson can't shoot, that's his problem, dude has insane hops but that's about it.

Surprised Robinson got cut. Wasn't he compared to Gerald Wallace coming out. He seems like that Balkman mold...it might be good to have a guy like that who can be an energy/hustle defender...Wiz need someone like that when they face the bigger wings in the conference.

Just last night I watched a college bb preview show that featured Jim Calhoun. He talked about his guys last season having talent but the group didn't achieve. He said he cared a lot about Dyson and Robinson, but that team underachieved.

Today I see Robinson's cut. My thoughts are what is so wrong that this kid's already being discarded?

Awesome thread, eitanr! Honestly, I don't know a thing about Goodridge but your description makes him sound like a guy the team can use.

I was thinking about posting about Antonio Anderson a couple days back. Nice distributor and good all around game.

I believe in JR Giddens since doc liked him before the Celts drafted Giddens. My thought is Giddens and Danny Green are legit, athletic SFs who could produce given the opportunity. Green I would rate about as high as Jeffers.

I just like Jeffers' high motor. Certain players bring it all the time and that makes them special. eitanr, you've assembled a real nice list of exactly the type guys EG and Flip need to be looking for. There is one player out there somewhere that can be an impact player for this team.

Post#9 » by eitanr » Fri Oct 22, 2010 7:05 pm

I was bored at work and decided to make a list of all the notable pre-season cuts I found.

Stanley Robinson, when I saw him in UCONN and even in Summer League, really just seemed like a Renaldo Balkman type player. Which isn't too shabby IMHO. The guy seemed like he was athletic and can run the break well, yet had the proper build to cover the premier wings in the East.

I feel the Wizards will need a guy who they can simply set out to shutdown wings. I mean look at the wings in the division, let alone the conference, James, Wade, G. Wallace, S. Jackson, V. Carter...I mean those are some big and talented wings that may feast on the Wizards. Who do the Wizards have to even put a body on them?

Getting an athletic guy now just to try and defend those wings during key stretches of games (like what the Celts ended up doing with Tony Allen) may not be a bad move. A guy like Stanley Robinson could be that guy.

Nichols does intrigue me and considering he got cut by the wing heavy Jazz, I wouldn't be too concerend. He reminds me of a more refined Anthony Morrow and playing under Jim Boehim for several years also makes me feel good about the kid.

Check out the Vernon Goodridge youtube clip above and the kid will amaze you. Still unsure why he got caught, but he shows some tremendous athleticsm...reminds me of Sergi Ibaka.

Antonio Anderson, Otheyus Jeffers, and Kyle Weaver all seem like guys who you can stick into a starting lineup or play siginficant minutes with and you won't be worse...i.e. they are nice gap fillers if you have injuries, but I am not sure how much upside they have etc.

I saw a lot of Stephen Lasme and really like the guy. I was semi-shocked Boston took the low bball IQ Von Wafer over him. I think he was only cut because Wafer had a guaranteed deal and West had the suspension to start the year.

Thanks for the positive feedback!

We all know what is needed is a high-energy hustle defender/rebounder who can hit spot-up 3's. So far, I don't see anybody on this list who fits that criteria.

This list is basically a bunch of "hustle guys" who can't shoot. We already have that in Trevor Booker. Demetris Nichols is the one shooter on the list, but he's a skinny, no-rebounding gunner. He's basically Nick Young with poorer handles.

The only name mentioned whom I honestly think might be a better fit than anybody already on our roster is Alonzo Gee.

That's a good comparison - Nichols to Young. Nichols is even longer than Nick - He's 6'7.5 with a 7'0.25 wingspan - tremendous for a 2/3. He did have a very nice 18 game season in the NBADL in 2008/2009 - partly due to getting PT - 37.7 minutes/game. He averaged 21.7 PPG on 47.5% FG and an impressive 45.5% from 3, got to the foul line ok for a jump shooter (4.9 FTA's), 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.2 steals, and even 1.2 blocks. He's no Scotty Pippen, but he probably belongs in the NBA.

This is fun talk, but does anyone here think that Ernie would swoop-in and sign a camp cut that did not play in pre-season for us? Gee might be an exception, but he is still a Spur.

I don't place much emphasis on D-League stats.

Nichols averaged just 4.8 boards and 1.3 assists per 40 minutes in the French league last year. That's equal to 4.4 boards and 1.2 assists per 36 minutes. Put him in the NBA with better competition and those numbers will drop further. He's an anemic rebounder and passer. He's Nick Young with less handles. He's a year older than Young too.

Oh, I mostly agree - and also don't put much stock on French league stats, because the style of play is different - and I have no clue about his handles. But getting a Nick Young for nothing and minimum salary makes some sense to me.

Kid comes with a lot of baggage, supposed attitude problem.

Leading up to the draft I read an ESPN piece on him from 2 years ago and I wonder how come this dude doesn't catch a break.

Love the way he's playing, and was actually hoping Washington was going to make a move for him.

Zoubek anyone? I recall a few here liking him as a potential second round pick for the Wiz. Not as athletic as Hamady but probably more polished and ready to play.

Zoubek too. I kind of thought he might have been a good late 2nd or FA pickup, but I know nothing about his summer league or camp. He was a strong rebounder in college. A definite need.

i don't know about more polished. he seemed like a goon at duke - a guy that coach k didn't entirely trust. i'd still like him to be on the roster though. i mean, if aaron gray is on a roster, zoubek deserves a shot too right? i'm also still a danny green fan. every player is a hustle player if they're in danger of not making a team.

If we picked up Zoubek, I think we're challenging 72 wins, being so dominant that it just wouldn't even be fun anymore. Do you really want that? For me it's the uncertainty that keeps it all interesting.

I'm assuming closg is pitching a tent at the news of Zoubek's availability. If ernie fails to sign him he may just have an aneurism.
