Rockets Interested in Varejao

Post#1 » by Joseph17 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 2:52 am

The wiretap said that the Rockets are interested in Varejao and I personally think that adding him would be a GREAT move for the Rockets. He's a legit backup center and he's exactly the kind of player the Rockets need. Who would you offer for him?

Dear god...between Luis, Hill and Varajao NO ONE in the NBA could beat our hair!

Jeffries expiring + Jermaine Taylor? Maybe a 2nd round pick.

Why would the Cavs do that?

To get out of Varejao's contract? Jeffries is an expiring.

Varejao is no more a center than Jordan Hill is.
He's a decent player, but I don't see the need.

If Morey could jedi mind trick the Cavs into trading him for Jeffries, Taylor and a 2nd I'd obviously take him, but I read somewhere the Cavs only would consider trading him for a superstar caliber player... Good luck with that.

Yeah I guess, but I thought they would want something more than an expiring contract for him. I'm pretty sure he led the team in +/- last year and he's arguably their most important player.

Varejao is much better defensively than Jordan Hill at this point.

He's a legit backup center imo. His natural position is pf, but he's more than capable of playing center. He always used to play center for the Cavs when Z was out.

He is, but like Hill he's a combo big, better fitted playing the 4.
Of course Varejao clearly is the better player now, but I like Hill's potential over Varejao's production, espeically if you also consider their contracts and the fact the neither would play a lot of minutes. I also think Hill fits this system (a lot) better, having a more or less reliable jump shot and a few post moves.
That said, any deal with Varejao incoming and Jeffries outgoing is an automatic win, even though I hate wachting Varejao play.

Maggette isn't too shabby either. His statline against the Wolves today: 14 minutes, 17 Points 0/2 FG, 17/20 FT.

he can play center because 90% of the centers in this league are pf

I'd rather the Rockets try to trade for Gortat than Varejao since he's more of a true center.
They're both signed for the next 4 years with Gortat making a bit less each year
We know Morey likes him.
With the possibility of Fran Vasquez coming next year the Magic might want to clear some cap room for him now by acquiring JJ's expiring contract. They also drafted Daniel Orton to back up Dwight Howard.

Jared Jeffries + Jermaine Taylor = Marcin Gortat

Varejao's salary this year and the next 3 years: $7m, $7.7m, $8.4m, $9.1m (with a team option for a 5th year at $9.8m)
Gortat's salary this year and the next 3 years: $6.3m, $6.8m, $7.3m and $7.7m
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

he's a nice hustle player but is he really worth it?! $33 mil for the next 5 years. his offense is all hustle. his man to man defense is solid. his rebounding is solid for his size and minutes. but he's not a difference maker in defense and he is not a shot blocker. he doesn't bring a whole lot more than what Jordan Hill brings to the table other than experience and a better defense, and not a whole lot better at that.

and plus who are we supposed to give up for him if cleveland views him as a valuable asset?

Eh if it's only about a 1 million a year difference I say go for Varejao. They are both listed at 6'11. I know that Gortat is stronger than Varejao, but I would have Varejao as my backup center than Gortat. Think about which centers in the NBA Varejao is actually going to struggle with because of his lack of size. I can't think of many at all.
