Roster Deadline

Post#1 » by SuperReggie31 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 1:42 pm

As many of you may know, tomorrow night is the deadline for teams to reduce their roster down to the league maximum of 15. We have 16.

Who stays or who goes based on what you have seen in the preaseason?

My thoughts are either Dunleavy (on/off games, didn't play much last night), D. Jones (not much playing time), or Solomon Jones. He had some bright flashes in the games he played.

What do you think?

It's sounding as though no one wants to trade with us because they just know we will drop someone to get to 15. I want it to be S. Jones and believe it will be. I will be very disappointed if we drop Rolle.

Solomon Jones or Magnum Rolle. Dahntay is a player who can be trade

My guess is Solomon Jones. Yesterday's game against the Bulls was one where there were some funky lineups (Dunleavy playing only 4 minutes, Stephenson starting and playing 29, Collison playing about 19) and throughout all that Solo didn't even see the floor.

Dahntay Jones has more trade value. He's a solid wing defender who averaged a career high in points last season, so I think the Pacers will save him for a potential deal. I highly doubt they release Rolle...they went out of their way to sign him, knowing that would bump them up to 16 (17 not counting Allred). It's tough to imagine Rolle having much less of an impact than Solo, especially on a cheaper contract.

Dunleavy isn't going anywhere right now. His $11 million expiring contract is way too valuable to trade later this season or to let walk and free up cap space.

It most definitely would be someone with an expiring contract, or a non-guaranteed contract. Dunleavy figures to be a major part of the rotation, as does Jeff Foster. McRoberts and AJ Price have non-guaranteed deals, but both have played well and look to be rotational players as well. That really leaves Solo and Magnum. The big questions is do the Pacers want to keep a guy who might help this year a bit in Solo, or a guy who looks to be a more likely long-term guy on the roster.

My ultimate vote goes to Solo, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were Magnum as well. He hasn't been lights out, and I would assume is non-guaranteed to some extent as well.

Magnum has a little more potential than Solo, and their production would probably be pretty even. Between those two guys, most of us would like to see Solo go, no?

As it stands now, I see Solo as being the one who is waived.

Honestly, TJ makes the most sense, he isnt playing, we really cant afford to drop a big man cause we are already thin, ditch TJ

OR

is it possible to trade someone like Dahntey for a draft pick?

That's what I'm afraid might happen - Dahntay getting traded. Which is too bad because I like him...he averaged a career year offensively and as long as he could get that defensive mindset back like he had in Denver, he'd be an excellent fit.

So, he might get traded for a draft pick and, depending on which team he would land on, also a non-guaranteed player which could be waived.

There is no way Dunleavy goes. He looks to be a starter right now.

I think it comes down to S. Jones, Ford, or Rolle. And, I can see an arguement for each. Pacers really lack depth at center and power forward. Short term Jones is probably more useful than Rolle since he's been in the league for a couple years. That could be important since Foster and Hansbrough bring some health concerns to the table.

Rolle based on the Summer League has some upside. Its hard for me to see tha Pacers letting him go unless training camp has in some way dampened his stock.

The savings from a reasonable TJ Ford buyout would seen to fund Rolle's contract. TJ just hasn't sold me that he's an upgrade over Price in any way. The luxury of a veteran 3rd sting pg doesn't seem to me to outway needs at the 4 and 5 positions. In my mind this is the most logical move.

TJ shouldn't get cut because an expiring that size has some market value.

Good point but, if a really great opportunity presented itself you would still have the Dunleavy and Foster expirings to work with.

We have to cut our roster down before season starts. Looks like no trades are in the works.
TJ is the least valuable from a player perspective but he has an expiring contract that would be valuable.
Mikey D will be the started for now and is a valuable player and expiring.
Dahntay is the most valuable trade chip at the moment but I don't think there is time to make a trade now so may look at trades during the season

If we cut someone say Magnum Rolle, is it possible to have him go to the D-League, let him get some experience, bulk up and then during the season when we pull off a trade and possibly reduce the roster to 14, bring him back? I know technically we wouldnt have "rights" to him but is it possible?

Magnum was not present at today's fan jam. They announced him to the crowd as having an 'illness'. All other players were present and active participants in the on court activities. Read into that what you will.

^^I noticed that, too. It just doesn't make sense after signing him to a contract.

I thought Rolle's contract was at least partially guaranteed...so wouldn't that mean that he couldn't be straight-up released?

Exactly. That's why either the signing or the hypothetical cutting of Rolle is a mistake.
