UFC 125: Resolution (JAN 1/11)

Post#1 » by navibharj » Fri Oct 15, 2010 8:45 pm

UFC 125 was announced just recently to kick off the 2011 calender at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Main card

* Lightweight Championship bout: Frankie Edgar (c) vs. Gray Maynard
* Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi
* Welterweight bout:Nate Diaz vs. Dong Hyun Kim
* Middleweight bout: Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann
* Light Heavyweight bout: Brandon Vera vs. Thiago Silva

Preliminary card

Josh Grispi vs. Dustin Poirier
* Lightweight bout: Marcus Davis vs. Jeremy Stephens
* Featherweight bout: Mike Brown vs. Diego Nunes
* Middleweight bout: Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares
* Welterweight bout: Daniel Roberts vs. Greg Soto
* Lightweight bout: Jacob Volkmann vs. Antonio McKee

Personally, like many, I feel main event will be 5 round wrestling battle featuring 2 fighters who really aren't exciting in their fighting approach (especially Maynard)

*UPDATE: Carwin will not fight due to back injury (if no surgery = 8-12 weeks, if surgery = unknown0

Aside: Carwin announced this fight to his fans via e-mail. As much trouble the steroid allegations brought to his name, he is one of the most friendliest figthers out there and thanks his fan base in any interview or event.

*UPDATE 2: Because of UFC merger with WEC, Jose Aldo is now the UFC featherweight champion and will battle a fighter TBA at UFC 125 on Jan. 1. Rumors have swirled that it's Mark Hominick with Josh Grispi as the alternate.

*UPDATE 3: Due to Injury, Jose Aldo will most likely pull out of his co main event fight versus Josh Grispi

Alternative in the works : Josh Grispi vs. Dustin Poirier (CONFIRMED)

Thiago Silva vs. Vera would be the fifth maincard fight, I imagine.

There have been many worse PPV's. I actually kind of like this one so far.

Nelson vs Carwin could be a huge fight.

Diaz vs Kim would be a great fight just to see Diaz back in the UFC.

While Maynard vs Edgar could be a 25 minute wrestling match, but you can hardly bash a PPV for having a title fight, its not like they can use anyone else. That said, Edgar could stuff the take downs, he's got pretty good TDD, and he'd definatly get the better on the feet (not like he throws tons of kicks either to open himself up). While I am not the biggest fan of the 25 minute pure wrestling matchs, I love dynamic up and down fights with great ground game, and this could well be this fight. For Edgar I think this is the fight that solidifies him as the champ - BJ just used only 1 aspect of his game - the stand up (and boxing at that), Gray will take him to the complete other side of the spectrum, and will show us what Edgar has now against guys that want to do nothing but the ground game.

Guida vs Gomi is the battle for the who becomes the offical gatekeeper of the LW division, about 18 months ago I'd have been a lot more excited for this fight.

Its certainly not what I'd expect for the start of year card, but logistically speaking there is not much else to do unless a few cards fall into place ('ship belt wise and contender wise).

In terms of New Years cards, this one definitely does not match UFC 92's epic card, but it beats UFC 108 (yuck). All five fights here are interesting. I especially want to see Kim because he completely dominated Amir Sadollah in his previous fight.

There has to be another name added to this. It won't sell.

Here's the entire rumored card thus far:

* Lightweight Championship bout: United States Frankie Edgar (c) vs. United States Gray Maynard
* Heavyweight bout: United States Shane Carwin vs. United States Roy Nelson
* Lightweight bout: United States Clay Guida vs. Japan Takanori Gomi

* Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera
* Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann
* Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares
* Antonio McKee vs.Jacob Volkmann
* Nate Diaz vs. Dong Hyun Kim

I think it has potential to have some good fights and is pretty deep, even if it isn't the best card in the world. The championship fight, the other two announced fights will be good, anytime Leben/Diaz fights is usually entertaining. Vera/Silva should be a good muay thai match IMO.

I don't know, I think so much of the unappealing aspect is the main event which is because both guys are pretty much decision machines.

I'm excited to see McKee finally make it to the big leagues. He's old, 40-ish, I think, but he's a legit talent.

I love Nelson, even if it's in a homerish fan boy way.
I'd love to see him get in better shape for this one, but I don't think it matters either way. Carwins got a 6 inch reach advantage and is still the number 2 heavyweight in the UFC in my books.

This is a pretty deep card with potential for a lot of exciting matches. I don't see any way they don't have a spike prelim for this as all of these fights deserve to be seen.

- Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard [LW title]
- Shane Carwin vs. Roy Nelson
- Takanori Gomi vs. Clay Guida

- Nate Diaz vs. Dong Hyun Kim
- Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera

Spike:
- Chris Leben vs. Brian Stann
- Phil Baroni vs. Brad Tavares

Undercard
- Antonio McKee vs. Jacob Volkmann

would be my guess. Though I could see putting Leben/Stann on the main card in place of Silva/Vera or Diaz/Stun Gun as well.

Carwin is pulling out of co main event versus Nelson due to back injury

I am going to pull out of the fight with Roy Nelson. As many of you know I have been having some back pain. I had an MRI yesterday and I have some damage that may really require surgery. If the doctors do not have to perform surgery then I will be out 8-12 weeks. If they do have to perform surgery I do not know how long I will be out of action.

I wonder who will be fill in for the fight? and if so, does winner still get title shot

Shaub vs. Nelson rematch could be possible or Mir vs Nelson

Nelson still eats Schaub for breakfast. Mir is a better fight. Kongo would work too.

I think Nelson would still KO Schaub, a rematch with Ben Rothwell makes sense .

Its funny that Nelson is coming off a serious knee injury and Carwin called him out for not signing because he claimed Nelson was scared. Nelson signs despite his injury, and Carwin pulls out.

Clearly Carwin isn't scared of Nelson. Ironic, though.

Good call. I like the idea of a rematch, so Nelson can actually get a win on paper against Rothwell instead of "leaving it up to the judges".

I was thinking we'd see the rematch with Rothwell before Roy fought JDS , but that didn't happen . Now is a good time as any .
