Tramon Williams Offered Contract

Green Bay — The Green Bay Packers have made a competitive contract offer to Tramon Williams that is commensurate with what they've paid Al Harris, the player he is replacing at right cornerback.

In the midst of an outstanding season, the 27-year-old Williams ranks at the top of the list of players the Packers want to re-sign for the long haul.

The Journal Sentinel learned the club is willing to pay Williams more than Harris, whose average per year is $5.418 million, but not close to Charles Woodson, whose deal averages $9.73 million.

Yep, this is a must for this team in order to bridge the gap to Shields and whatever other youth we develop at the position. Plus it's still not appreciated enough just how good Tramon has been this season (and how much he's improved every single season, for that matter), although I heard he was on Jim Rome's radio show the other day. Anybody hear that interview? Was Rome talking him up?

I heard the very end of it. Rome was talking him up, saying how he worked hard as an undrafted free agent to become a starting cornerback. Said Clay talked up Tramon. Tramon sounds like a really cool dude, very soft spoken from what I heard.

I agree, but if Williams continues his great play, he'd get a fortune from some team if he hit the open market. So if i was Tramon, i'd want at least 7-7.5 million per because he'd easily get that as a free agent. In fact, with the incredible demand for quality corners in today's pass happy NFL and with Williams only being 27, i could see a team paying him 8-9 million per. The fact though that he really seems to want to stay makes me think he'll accept less, but only to a degree.

Tough sPot for Tramon. I'm sure his agent is telling him to wait but watching everyone else drop like flies has got to be freaking him out somewhat. Hope we can lock him up considering if we don't we won't try to bring in a suitable replacement.

Gotta get that Ted jab in somewhere. I read the first few sentences and I was worried you wouldn't.

EDIT: And who the hell available in the NFL would be a suitable replacement? I'm sure you're one of the people that was getting worried we wouldn't fill the defensive backfield once Harris/Woody got old. Well, Ted's strategy wins again as he brings an undrafted kid in to play at a Pro Bowl level as Harris begins to get phased out. Also, I'm not saying Shields is that great just yet, but he could easily end up as a #2 CB someday.

The one place I'll agree with you he didn't look for a suitable replacement is whoever he brought in behind Favre when he "ran him out of town." We still need to find a suitable fill-in there.

In a game that featured both New York's Darrelle Revis and Green Bay's Charles Woodson, the best cornerback on the field Sunday in East Rutherford, N.J., was the Packers' Tramon Williams. That's right. Tramon Williams. The fourth-year veteran is having an outstanding season, and people around the league are starting to notice. Little wonder that Packers general manager Ted Thompson recently began trying to sign Williams to a long-term contract extension.

Williams had his third interception of the season on Sunday, and it was his third pick in the past four games. He also recovered a key Jets fumble to thwart another New York drive. Williams has started all eight games in a Packers secondary that has had to overcome an injury to rookie safety Morgan Burnett, and play without rehabbing veterans Al Harris and Atari Bigby (both of whom remain on PUP).

So far, even with Clay Matthews' standout season on the sack front, Williams has been Green Bay's most valuable defender.

Good. He's (IMO) tied for the most important player on this defense so far with year with Matthews and Raji.

Raji has been an absolute monster and played a ridiculous amount of snaps. Tramon has been about as close to lock down as you can get most of the time.

Need moar Tramon.

If the NT we picked up from the Jets plays anything like he did yesterday, I hope he is around.

AJ Hawk has picked up his play recently. I doubt he is back though because of his salary and having Bishop, Barnett and Chillar at ILB. It would be nice if he took a pay cut and was okay with being a back-up though.

I really hope Jolly is back as well. I think we gave Derrick Martin a 2-year deal, so he should be back as an emergency safety/ST player too.

I also wouldn't be stun if we could keep Bigby on the cheap either as a back-up or starter if Burnett doesn't fully recover.
